The STi lists for $500 new. Keep in mind that you won't have a warranty if you buy it used -- unless the unit is still under warranty and if Bel agrees to let the original owner transfer his registered warranty to you.

I find it hard to believe that someone would be selling their STi without the original case. I could understand selling it without the original external speaker if the owner has already installed that in their car and if he/she plans to use it with another Bel/Escort radar detector. In any event, the STi's speaker isn't very loud, making it hard to hear with the windows down or with the car stereo turned up. Thats why the STi comes with the external speaker as standard equipment.

Personally, I would ask for the STi's serial number and check it out with Bel. They can verify if it is indeed the original owner who is selling it or if the STi is stolen. Tell the seller you need the serial number to determine what firmware revision the STi is -- any excuse to get the serial number.

The couple times I sold mine at the end of summer I managed to net about $400.

It isn't that hard to believe, is it?

I bought my STi brand new in the US several years ago, threw the case out, and drove it back across the border into Canada without declaring it. Several of my friends subsequently did the same.

Fortunately, the ongoing firmware updates have given more than enough reason to keep the thing!

Well, that makes sense and isn't a situation which I had thought of.
