V955 vs. V995

Hello everyone, I am new to the forums and brand new to the radar detector scene so please forgive my ignorance. I have been doing a decent amount of research and have decided to go with either the Beltronics V955 or V995 unless someone can convince me otherwise. There is about a $62 difference between the two.

I remember reading that most members here feel the performance is about the same while the feature set is different. Is that true?

The V995 comes with a smart cord and a nice carrying case as well as a tech display with the actual frequency it found. Are these features worth my $62 or is there something else in there that should make me decide hands down to spring for the extra?

Also, does anyone know a place better than amazon.com to buy these? V955 is $156 and the V995 is $218.

What is your price range? For a first detector the V955 would be fine. Correct me if I am wrong but detection range is about the same between the two. You are adding features that are handy to educated detector users with the 995. Perhaps someone else can chime in.

Well, originally I was actually going to go nuts and go for the Escort 9500ix, but I just can't justify that kind of money for the amount of driving I do and where I go. I'm in CA and I've only driven to Vegas once in the last few years, but we think we're going to do it more often.

My price range has become a more modest $200ish so either of these models will do fine. I know the Whistler XTR-695 is a pretty good model at this price point.

Performance usually is virtually identical amongst the Vector models. Using the tech display to learn what Ka band radar frequencies are used in your area is very handy. Tech display also comes in handy to allow you to ignore false Ka band alerts caused by cheap import brand radar detectors.

No matter where you buy your Bel/Escort radar detector, make sure that the seller is an authorized Bel or Escort dealer or otherwise you will have no warranty and might receive a refurbished unit which has a fake serial number sticker.

Personally, I really like the V995 since it has the same performance minus just two features of the more expensive RX-65.

I also noticed in this chart: Beltronics Radar Detectors :: Detector Comparison Chart that the 995 has something called selectable bands. Does anyone know what that means? I know that since I'm in California, I can turn off POP and X-band, but I remember reading that I can do that with the 955.

The V955 can turn off X band.

The V955 can turn off X band.

If I remember correctly it can turn off in city mode only.
