POP on will increase the detector's response time to most radar signals. With POP on, the detector has to keep "looking" at the specific POP frequencies as it scans through all of the frequencies that police radar is used on (called "sweeping") which will slow down the response time.
Also, as you found out, cheap detector emissions can cause a POP alert.
The negatives of having POP on far outweight the slim chance that you will ever come across true POP radar being used. I recommend turning POP off.
