Default STI Driver and Ontario LASER???

So I've had the STI Driver for 6 or 8 months now and it's worked flawlessly in Ontario and saved me a ton of tickets... I also use it in NY, MI, OH and IN... works great in those states as well. I actually have it hard wired and mounted right on my dash... never had an issue with it there for those in Ontario that are curious about whether it actually is RDD proof... It is.

    Here's my issues...

I'M TIRED OF GETTING THE SNOT FREAKED OUT OF ME!!!

I'm Cruising the 401 Eastbound from Windsor to Toronto and see a cop car parked under an overpass in the WESTBOUND Lanes... I slow down but detector stays quiet. I pass the cop and notice that it's a chase car with an officer in it and another officer is standing under the bridge with a Big White detector on a tripod and his eye on it and focusing down the West Bound traffic. I pass them expecting my detector to go nuts as its probably laser but not focused on my lane or direction of travel...

    I GET NOTHING...

The STI Driver has picked Laser in the past and specifically, on the same stretch of highway, a couple days before... What gives? If the cop was not bent over standing at the tripod, I would think nothing of it... but he WAS bent over standing at the tripod looking down the westbound Traffic.

    Q. Why did i not pick up the residual signal?
    Q. Is it possible that he was not actually pulling the trigger or how does this work?
    Q. Please don't tell me that there's something new on the market that the OPP are using?

Any assistance on this would be greatly appreciated as you can imagine, I was just a little freaked out... My detector is set to bone stock out of the box and I've never tweaked, updated or modified anything with it...

    Thanks,
    Racky

Your STI Driver will not save you from laser. You need laser jammers.
The "big white detector" sounds like a laser atlanta. a lidar gun. by the time your RD goes off. IF it goes off, he already has your speed.

There's nothing you can do about "getting the snot freaked out" of you. Unless you get jammers, it is just a matter of time before you're done with lidar.

X2!! You'll be lucky and I mean very lucky if you get a warning on lidar for 1/2 of the times you get targeted. A good lidar operator will never even set your STi off, especially if they are tripod mounted, very steady shots that way.

Why would you have the STI dash mounted?

You DO realize you live in a province that is draconian at best regarding countermeasures? My suggestion is to get a visor pouch and have it mounted up there. Having it out in plain sight is an invitation to the roadside disco, courtesy of the OPP!

Regarding the white "detector"...THAT is the Laser Atlanta SpeedLaser R LIDAR gun.

    Thanks all for the replies.

So, if it's Lidar, then the operator was picking vehicles to check speed but not actually doing so? On a divided highway, if they are pointing and operating the Lidar at a vehicle across the highway divider and behind me, would or should the STI still not pick up laser in the area? Please don't tell me that the signal from the Lidar is so concentrated that it needs to be on my vehicle for the rd to catch it? If this is the case then my next stop will be the laser jammer forums and I'll consider myself pretty lucky thus far.

As for mounting the rd on my dash, the x5 has a perfect spot on the dash that is not visable from beside and is only visible from the front. As I only use it on the highway, I'm not concerned about it being seen. When I park or driving around town, the power cord is clearly out and he unit off. Remember that in Ontario it's not illegal to own but is illegal to use. I've become pretty confident in regular Ontario K band not finding me and drive/react accordingly. I'll post some pics of my setup.

One more quick note and perhaps other canadians can confirm this. Opp and other forces here are far more aware that very few risk running RD'S because of their counter measures and strict enforcement. As such, it has been my experience that police here are more likely to drive with their radars on and be more active with using lasers as opposed to just waiting to check a car that looks likenits speeding. I find that driving in MI or OH, you do not get anywhere near the warning as the popo know and expect drivers to be "listening" for them.

    Just my thoughts.

Thanks again for all the feedback and assistance thus far.

Laser Atlanta as stated. What makes you think the cop was shooting you?

    Hi Soljake,

I'm not sure that he was shooting me and as he was on the opposite side of the highway, I would imagine that he was shooting the westbound traffic and I was eastbound. I just thought and hoped that the STI would pick up the LIDAR in the area if it was being used...

Still curious as to whether the LIDAR needs to be directed and active directly on my vehicle to make my STI wake up...

    Welcome fellow northerner!

Q 1. Unlike Radar Laser is very accurate and gives of very little Light. So for distance the closer your are to lidar the smaller the diameter. What u are hoping for is the officer targeting another vehicle in your vicinity and your detector detects it.
    Q. Please read up in the general discussion on lasers.
    Q. Nothing new on here it is the laser Atlanta used by Toronto Police.

U have been very lucky not to have gotten caught yet. Leaving the RD. on the dash is asking for trouble.
Check out DC Dave78's posts in the Escort section on Redline.
OPP is the worst at this RDD. But that is not the only thing they use. Sight of an RD.
You have to hide it as per Victor's post.
BTW. Laser is going to take over just a matter of time.
So unless u purchase a Jammer like the Blinder or a LI you are going to get owned very soon.
    http://www.radardetector.net/forums/...-glossary.html

By the time the STI even detects it you are going to get the ticket and if the see your STI then that is a hugh fine.

You have come to the right place for advise and assistance.

You were traveling Eastbound, the cop was shooting Westbound traffic.

No RD on the market is going to detect Lidar presence in this case, it's very narrow bundle of light (not radio waves).

You have to be the target (Sti will go off in most cases- might not if they shoot low at the tag which is what they do using tripod) or they shoot car directly in front of you ( STi will only go off if the shot was sloppy and scatter hits you).
