    Default question about blinder alerts

well, i'm definitely "sold" on an x50. i also want to get the m-20, but i just wanted to make sure that the audible warning provided by blinder's in-cabin speaker is sufficient to rely upon laser detection. why do i ask when i will be x50-equipped? well, i'm afraid it will not be good for me to mount my x50 as low as recommended because my car (04 jetta) has a rather high rear deck that i'm sure will block the rear view of the x50.

i figure that i will have to mount the detector about mid-windshield, which in that case wouldn't it be too high for effective laser detection? so i might as well go for the "high as possible" approach to mounting the x50, yes? if my assumptions are correct, than my question about blinder's audible warning stands.

if mounting the x50 low will be okay despite the high rear deck, than i guess all is well thanks!

    ps - awesome site, roy

Mount all radar detectors as high as possible because the distance increases the higher the radar detector is. If you have the $400, get a Valentine One because it is the only radar detector with arrows and 2 antennas (1 front and 1 rear) because it has a patent on this. Just remember, the V1 beats the X50 in rear radar detection by 2-3 miles in Ka band detection and it picks up 9 sources of any type of radar as opposed to the X50 with 8 (4 X, 2 K, 2 Ka) sources.

i appreciate the advice, but i've done my research & the x50 seems better for me personally...(this coming from someone who always held the v1 at such high esteem).

somewhere on radarbusters.com, roy advises against mounting the detector high; that is why i made the initial inquiry. i really dont want to start a "high vs. low" debate here, just looking for a straight-forward answer. thanks!

thanks for the support, but this isnt really about "x50 vs. v1."

so you're saying that if i did mount my x50 high, then it would pick up laser detection that is being shot at my front bumper area? i thought the latest SML test showed that NO RDs picked up on the laser when being shot at the headlights :?

sorry, i guess this isnt so much a "laser jammer" question... ops:

Mounting the detector high will pretty much wipe out any chance of laser detection when it's on your bumper, but by that time it's too late unless you're using veil. Mounting the Escort high will increase the line of sight in some situations, and will position the detector to see through windows ahead of you. This gives you a chance to detect laser when it's targeting a car in front of you. I'd suggest reading this:

so basically, high-mounting will not detect laser hitting ME, but rather someone else? ok, that makes sense and, mounting low would be pointless considering that i've been shot already? my best bet for avoiding laser is definitely an m20, yes?

oh yeah, that brings up a question i have about laserveil...if my x50 cant detect that I'M being shot by laser, then what good does laserveil do?

it seems to me that laserveil needs to be combined with an m20 for greatest results...

these are all assumptions on my part; i'm just looking for clarification on what i *think* could be correct judgements...thanks!

Really I don't think the height matters, since the X50 doesn't look backwards anyway. It does have a rear lidar sensor IIRC but you really need that

yeah, but my question is in regards to front laser detection; not rear. thanks anyways!

the only thing i'm concerned about regarding rear detection is the fact that low mounting could be detrimental to the RDs ability to "see" out the back efficiently, due to the high rear deck in my car. thus decreasing it's radar-sensing capabilities from behind.

again, i'm no expert. just trying to see if my assumptions are correct. tia!

    Something to think about:
Maybe you should be a little more concerned with rear laser protection. A vey common laser speed trap method used by police is to sit on an overpass directly over the road and target vehicles that pass underneath, then radio the vehicle ID to chase cars. You usually don't see them targeting on the far side of the overpass...

The X50 doesn't have any "rear view": no rear radar antenna or lidar sensor. Any rear radar it receives will be reflected off of things in front of you, billboards, road signs, other vehicles etc. So you dont need to take the rear view into account when mounting the X50...

    Yes, in my opinion.
For maximum radar detection, I recommend mounting high. The higher it is, the more "line of sight" you would have with the targeting radar. If you do the math, a foot higher could give you an extra 1/3 mile or more, which could make a difference.

If you are going to have a blinder too, that should be sufficient enough for lidar warnings.
