There is a guy on the M3 Forums who has his mounted behind the lower front grill one on each side. I do not know how to upload a picture to show, but he says it works perfectly. The way that lower grill is, it is set back from the front of the bumper (Which I thought could be an issue too) and they are behind the mesh of the grill.

My thinking on the veritcle was if the units create a RADIUS of protection, why would the verticle mount be an issue? I know there a requirement that they be LEVEL, but you can level them in a verticle manner.

Can anyone explain why they lose their effectiveness when mounted veritcally? I would like to mount mine in my kidney grills of my M3 (not like the guy described above).
