Default Scuff marks on new Blinder Heads

    Hey all,

I was on the highway recently and just had a new blinder installed. I drove into a flock of bugs and one of the splattered right on one of my blinder heads. It was also hot, so it cooked right on there. I tried powerwashing it off but some residual remained. So I took a cloth and wiped it off. Now, there is a faint scuff mark on the head. I know that Blinder sells replacement lenses and that scratches and scuffs are expected. But I am wondering how bad does it have to be before I should replace the lenses? My Valentine 1 seems to have the same type of lens on the front and its scratched to all heck and still works fine. I even asked Valentine if the scratches are a concern and they said no....is it the same for blinder heads?

    Thanks!

I read the first post and I was about to suggest Meguire's "Plastix" plastic polish but nvm...

Minor scratches don't matter at all. A deep pit or dig, if short, will merely moderately disperse the IR output from the IR emitter LED which is directly behind it. A strong haze with a visible glazing effect, caused by sand, would seriously deteriorate the performance of a jammer head. If your jammer heads have such a haze, then Meguire's "Plastix" and some elbow grease is a good solution. You don't have to get rid of all of the haze. Its best to go for simply getting rid of the majority of the haze as this will restore the jammer head's effectiveness to around 95 to 97 percent of optimal. If Meguire's isn't getting rid of the haze quick enough, then light wet sanding (and I mean wet as in lots of water) with 2000 grit sand paper should be done until about half the haze disappears. Then switch to Meguire's Plastix and be sure to do a final rinse with water when done.

Thanks for everyone’s help. What I have should be no problem. Surface looks nice and shiny. Scuff is only visible when I shine a flashlight on it. Its less than the size of a dime and is certainly less severe than on my V1 lens, which will still pick up a TV remote in Antarctica

I have posted a lot of questions since deciding to invest in a jammer. I'm OCD on making things work right (a benefit when working in I.T. for more than 15 years). Everyone on this forum has been very helpful.

And I have to give Blinder-Guy credit. His offer to replace my lens for free is freaking phenomenal. My local shop my be able to score me one for free but if not, the support and help from blinder-guy is certainly welcome. From what I have read I may not even need a lens and he still offered to give me one. Its pretty hard to come across help like that these days. Heck, even our Dell account rep with work does not give us anything for free. I was thinking of getting a LPP or maybe LI but I was right to listen to Alex Roy. In a blog, he recommended blinder and I think I have made the right choice.

I promise, one of these days I will have figured out all I need and leave everyone on the forum alone

Oh Lord, if you need a flashlight to easily see the scuffs, then those definitely are not an issue. And yeah, Blinder Guy is the cat's meow. Micah is a heck of a good dude.
