SAE hp and lb-ft are not really metric. The last "power" one I have no clue what that is. Probably SAE hp (~746 watts) or maybe JIS hp / PS (750 W) or perhaps kW (1000 W).

I was refering to the last 1 of that post, its power is scaled in kW and torque in Nm...BTW isnt PS about the same as SAE HP?
Yep PS is about the same as a SAE hp, as I said (one is 750 watts the other is 746 - the only reason it exists is that Euro carmakers saw it easier to make the calculations from kW, just multiply kW by 3/4 and boom PS for your advertisements)Originally Posted by Arashi666
The exact conversion from Nm to lb-ft I don't recall, but a Newton is about 1/5 pound and a metre is about 3 1/5 feet, so, well hell I'll look it up...
1 lb-ft = 1.3558179 N·m
I dunno why everyone still uses hp, kW is nice and simple and you know what it is, wheras there are a thousand different definitions of "one horsepower". I guess it sounds good for the ad copy to say "300 horsepower" because it makes people imagine the car being pulled by 300 horses... in reality a horse can probably put out 10-15 hp for a few moments, then drop down to something around 3/4 hp or die/fall asleep/etc.
then for the time being lets say 1SAE HP = 750wOriginally Posted by SmaartAasSaabr
so thus 1HP = .75kW
so wouldnt you divide 'x' kW by 3/4 to get HP?
but I agree if EVERYBODY used metrics the world would be a better place
like 1 ft = 12 in and 1mi = 5280ft
while 1 m = 100cm and 1 kM = 1000m
much easier to conver without doing stuff like
1mi = 1.6km or 1in = 2.54cm and sh** like that
Yeah you are right. It's like trying to tell someone how to spell a word, it's easy as pie to write it out yourself but to say "a, d, b,..." it's much more difficult.Originally Posted by Arashi666
