I have went into a couple of places looking at car alarms and I am thinking of going w/a Viper system made by DEI. Does anyone have any ideas?

the only thing I know is those alarms are marked WAYYY up. I would try to make a friend that works at best buy or somthing. Serious, is it worth 500+ dollars to you?
Here in the uk we have alarm system ratings which are set by thatcham.
and insurance companys like cars to be fitted with a cat 2 immobiliser at least.
They basicly test cars alarms and immobilisers, they are set in cat 1 - cat 2 and cat 2 - 1.
a cat 1 is alarm and immobiliser, cat 2 is just an immobiliser, and 2 -1 is a cat 2 - 1 upgrade, which is an alarm add on for an immobiliser.
cat 1 alarms have self powered sirens and have also the immobiliser can only be turned off by disarmng them, cutting wires or pulling the fuse wont help, the only way to get passed one of theses is to bypass it completely.
i'm not sure if you have such testing ratings in the us.
other than that a high end alarm system like clifford or dei, will give you peace of mind that even if they do break into it they cant just jump in and drive off.
also theses high end alarms have to be pro fitted, unless your an auto electrician with alarm wiring skills.
In the film no man's land charlie sheen slim jims a porsche in day light in a shopping bag on the roof, then once inside he takes an ignition switch out of his shopping back, then he feels under the dash and pulls the wiring connector from the orignal switch, and then plugs his in. he then breaks the steering lock and drives off in a black flat noise turbo!
i got the viper 791xv.. love it, great range too...

Yeah, i have always liked the vipers and cliffords the best.
I have a clifford concept 300 on my vr6 which i'm scrapping due to engine failure, i the wiring diagram so i can undo all the wiring and at the same time label the wires, because the immobiliser ones are black.
i wasnt going to bother taking it off but its a good alarm and even if i fit it myself to my next motor, i may lose the cat 1 rating but most cars have cat 2 immobilisers on anway to keep the insurance happy, buts its dubtful they would know i've fitted it if i did say it was already fitted, they just need a copy of the install cert, which i have and i can change the details using this pc.
Hay my insurance cert was pritned off using my printeralthough they did send it through by email so we could tax the car.
and they sent the proper one by post and that was just a photo copy of the orignal, in fact my email prited one was better!
DEI apparantly has this new thing out called SST on some new units that allow for, atleast they CLAIM it can have, 1 mile range on the remotes, i can only see a need for this on the 2-way models though
Yeah, I looked at some of the Vipers, $240 for the one I like. I used to have the Hornet (DEI) and wasn't impressed w/ it at all.
I used to work at one of the major electronics retailers and have installed hundreds of Viper alarms, keyless entries, and remote starts. Very rarely did i see one come back with any problems. As for the range mentioned, i doubt that is valid in almost anywhere other than a corn field, as there is usually more interference. Viper has always been DEI's top line, so i assume they are still above Clifford since they bought them a couple years back.
If someone really wants to steal your car they will...professionals can bypass an alarm in a matter of seconds...they know most people just ignore car alarms.
The most effective thing I've seen is Low Jack. A friend of mine had low jack put on his lap top. It was stolen out of his car and the police picked it up quickly and located the guy who stole it working at a circuit city...
Ofcourse you could always go with a flame thrower security system if someone trys to break into your car flames will shoot out from the bottom of your car.
