Seems there is multiple opinions that one is better than the other when searhcing on Yahoo and Google.
Which is the best and why?

I'd just use whatever works well for your vehicle.
Run a UOA after each, and see what it says. Probably not much difference, but if your car "prefers" one or the other, that will search it out.
Speaking purely of my current Subarus.
A lot of us in the Subaru world cast a negative eye on Mobil1 - for some strange reason, our turbocharged Boxers just seem to burn through this oil faster.
Me? I've had nothing but great experiences with Mobil1 on my DSMs, and when I came over into the Subaru world about 2 years ago, I came in with my Mobil1 preference, too.
Having used Mobil1 5W30 and 10W30 in my Legacy - which is not exactly driven "easy" (I have a typically very short commute on surface-streets, I usually "launch" her 2x per week, and I redline as I please - also she's been through a tuning session and countless road-dyno pulls with the Mobil1) - I've *never* had excessive-loss issues.
The same can be said for my wife's WRX.
That said, I'm currently using what's considered a "magical" formulation for my Legacy - Castrol "German Made" 0W30, also a full-synthetic, and strangely enough, I'm seeing more consistent oil-pressure (I have an AutoMeter NEXUS oil-pressure gauge, spliced into one of the engine oil galleys, so this is an accurate account) than I was with the Mobil1. :?:
You can honestly read TONS of information on-line about various oils, there's lots of science, pseudo-science, and outright false-beliefs out there.![]()
I truly believe, though, that there's really no need for such in-depth debate.
Look at what your car prefers (i.e. is there any excessive consumption - or just more consumption - with one brand versus another), and get an UOA if you're really worried about it (i.e. if your vehicle is put to extreme uses and/or if you wish to "optimize" OCIs), and let that be your guide.

Doesn't Amsoil have an oil that they say will last you for a whole year, or 30k miles.
As of now, I have Mobile 1 in my SUV, and I drive I drive it hard. So far(only 2k miles) no oil loss.
Yeah they say 1 year or 25,000 miles.Originally Posted by ELVATO
You can't go wrong with Royal Purple, Amsoil, or Redline. All are %100 synthetic and are proven to work and even recover lost horsepower. Most advertised synthetic oils are actually NOT %100 synthetic.
Mobil1 is more readily available and is also quite good. It comes stock on the higher end cars like the Viper and Mercedes Benz. I use it on the Mercedes ML320 because it is the OEM oil for the recommended 10,000 mile interval. I do have to add a quart of oil once every 5,000 miles, but I think its just the car itself having problems as the whole pre-2005 M-class line is basically a lemon. It takes 8 quarts of Mobil1 to fill up every oil change plus the $30 MB filter, thank goodness it lasts for 10,000 miles.
I use Royal Purple on the Supra and I beat the hell out of that engine. I touch redline in lower gears and at least 135mph+ almost everytime I get on it, (on lonely higways of course). I also use it in stop and go traffic for a good part of the summer which is worse on an engine. No oil loss, and maintains good oil pressure at the right times. I do change oil every 2,000 miles though. The downside is that it is purple and is hard to see if it's clean or dirty. It costs $5.50 a quart.
Last, pick out a good filter. I always use OEM brand oil filters (Toyota is synthetic), or high quality aftermarket synthetics, and NEVER use Fram. Walmart's old oil filters were actually %100 synthetic and made by the same compnay as Mobil1 but sold for $2 each instead of $10. I don't think they still have the same ones now though. But that is what I used on the "regular" cars.
If you really wanted to, you could get long lasting oil from Amsoil, and team it up with one of their long lasting synthetic oil filters(forgot to mention I have this one). Go a year without changing your oil :P
i myself use mobil 1 =)
cant go wrong with either, brother is using Mobil 1 in the Celica, it runs great................. Im running Amsoil in the CL....... and DAMN its good, sure 1 bottle costs 2x as much as Mobil 1 but on aper it'll last 5x as long
Well hell, 2x as much as Mobil1? I don't like Mobil1 because it is 2x as much as anything elseOriginally Posted by Arashi666

Amsoil's claims are garbage

Mobil1 because it's cheaper. I also remember seeing something about it having less ash or something. I would never run my oil as long as amsoil says you can run their oil (which is their main selling point) so that doesn't matter to me.
Anyways, I sometimes run other oils, not always synthetic. Just depends on the car and situation. Realistically, only one of my cars will get true synthetic oil at every oil change.
