Default Project Lotus overturned by Insurance Company

So when I introduced myself on here a while back I had mentioned that I was going to start on my Lotus 7 clone this summer. I've read into the matter for over a year, planning out all of the technical aspects, but never looking how much it would be to insure a 200hp 1200lb Lotus 7 clone with a 20 year old male piloting the pocket rocket. I was unpleasantly surprised with the quote they gave me, and further searching has yielded no better results,
Ive been reading The Driver by Alex Roy, Im not sure if you guys are familiar with him: He drove across the US in 31:04 (yes 31 hours), winner of Gumball rallies, and so forth. He has a pretty good setup in his car

And recently I found out about some underground rallies (not street races) in my hometown area and the idea has just struck me: Why not build a rally car, much like Alex's M5?

Ive had some ideas for cars, preferably a 4 door sedan, something with plenty of room for all of the electronics, and something big enough to cruise comfortably.

I know this is a lot of reading, but I'm coming to you guys for suggestions for a sport touring car, used, priced right around 5K. Thanks for putting up with my novel of a post.
    -Cheers

If you are looking for a big and fast car for little investment you can't really get anything better than a Cadillac STS from the mid to late 1990's. Only real gripe is that they are automatic only and might be hard to increase the power output - that said they are already 300 hp

Any older German luxury sedan should fit your needs, Audi V8/A8, BMW 5/6/7 series, Mercedes S, SEL, SEC. Of course you have to watch out for maintenance costs, as you could get in big trouble with those.

Oh yes I know, Ive been quite fascinated with the A8's recently, although I have no idea where to start when it comes to Mercedes.

I guess an SEC might be good.

good luck for the $5000 560 SEC SEL you can probably find though. But a 20-25 year old car is going to need some maintenance.

    I like the mid 90's BMW 540

The more and more I look, it seems like this is an unrealistic goal. Whatever, a 1.8L miata inst a bad car, just something totally different.

How about a Porsche 928? It's not a sedan but it is a GT car pretty much built for what you want to do. Only problem is that with your price range you would have to get one of the earlier models which means alot of wear parts that may need replacing.

If you're considering coupes, it would be great.

Or a 6 series, that would work great too.
