The quantity of cars they've recalled in the past year has accelerated out of control.

The problem is that it is a "Social Media" generated recall. The amount of cars that actually had an acceleration issue, that was creatable or repeatable was 3.
What should be noted is that perception in this world of news media is far from reality.
Also, all the senators on these investigative committees should be forced to wear vests or jackets just like race car drivers, that way you know who is sponsoring their referendums or initiatives. You'd be surprised.
