    Default is torque torque?

This might sound stupid, I have a 1/2" torque wrench and say I get a reducing socket to make it a 3/8", will the torque reading be the same, since it is a bigger wrench?

The reason I am asking, instead of buying another wrench, since I do not use that much.

Yes the torque you set on the torque wrench will be the same no matter what socket size you put on the end of it.

example: 1/2 inch torque wrench using an adapter to a 3/8 drive socket of your choice.

Most of the torque specs you will need are in foot pounds. In working on cars for many years I have never come across a torque recommendation in inch pounds. They will be abbreviated as ex 18 ft. pounds.

There are many different systems to measure torque on a fastener. In/lb, ft/lb, and Nm(metric) are the most common.

Your TQ wrench will be fine if you come up to your value slowly. The adapter and/or socket extension must be 90* to the plane of the wrench handle. A crooked wobble adapter or long socket extension can skew your applied TQ value..

    FWIW: 12 in/lbs= 1 ft/lb

Some interior stuff is in inch/lbs, but yea, mostly ft/lbs.

On that note, my lug nuts take more torque than some Hondas make

Inch Pounds are just a smaller range of torque. For example like usng CCs instead of litres.

Back when you actually needed to know something to work with disc drives we used small inch pound torque wrenches to set up the heads.
