Mass. police ticket drivers in international race

    (AP) – 3 days ago

BOSTON — Massachusetts State Police say 11 drivers have been ticketed for speeding and other traffic violations around Boston as part of a crackdown on an international road rally known as Gumball 3000.

State Police spokesman David Procopio said Wednesday that some of the ticketed motorists were driving expensive vehicles. Some were going over 90 mph, one driver was cited for taking photos while driving and another for excessive horn blowing.

They were ticketed while driving on Interstate 93, Route 128, and Route 3.

The Gumball 3000 is a road rally that began May 1 in London. The cars were then flown to the United States, where drivers where scheduled to continue the 3,000-mile race through New York City and Toronto.

I saw them on the highway on the way to Niagara Falls. The first one I saw was an orange Lambourghini with Gumball 3000 on the rear window. He was being followed by an OPP SUV. There was a cop every 3miles with lidar and radar. Then I saw a Bentley, BMW, another Bentley, and a couple others taking the service road.

The Porsche guy was arrested for coming too close to pedestrians in the parking lot while he was doing donuts. A California guy in a Dodge Challenger had his car seized and license suspended for 7 days after being pulled over on the 401 a second time. He was doing 179km/h (111 mph).

The Gumball looks like it's more for show than anything else. If it were serious they would have taken different highways without announcing to everybody what they were doing. I understand that it is a rebellion for freedom of the highways and that is a good cause, but why make yourselves a target?

Most of the drivers I saw looked like spoiled rich kids living on Daddy's money. Nonetheless it's all in fun. Not sure how long it will last though, since there was a deadly accident with one entrant in Europe. Cops are taking a much dimmer view of it lately.

You can take any route you want, you just need to show up at the checkpoints.

Oh, I'm glad he did not tell them about the forum. Those guys are too stupid to operate a vehicle, let alone learn about laser jammers and good radar detectors.
