    Question Used Vette

There's a used vette for sale near where I work. 1996 Red Auto 40k miles, sticker says "R" title, $8800. I don't know much about vettes but for a 14 year old car this thing looks immaculate inside and out, i think it is a garage queen. Sound like a good deal?

An automatic C4? No. Walk away. Terrible idea.

Actually you want the auto on the C4 vettes. The mauals where miserable on that series. My issue is with the color. Red is pretty gory, look for a darker color. The C4's are crazy stealth though.

Also, those cars are so easy to work on even if you have a car with issues you can fix just about anything on them. The C4 "clamshell" engine bay is absolutely awesome!

40K miles is "almost new", and THAT is a great price. Be sure to fill it up all the way with gas, C4s had a bad leak problem and a huge task to fix ...

WTF does that mean? Does "R" stand for "Rebuilt after being totalled out and salvaged?"

14K is the KBB value, but what is an R title. If it's rebuilt then no it's a terrible deal and I would say at 14K you can get it cheaper.

Check out the Corvette Forum for used Vettes and get an idea of what they are selling for.

In that case you might as well give up on C4s, a "sports car" with a torque converter is a contradiction and makes kittens cry.

I agree with you, however they are ok for high speed commuting. The GTO's A4 was a total POS on the track but I found it was great for freeway bombing.

On that note, there are some people (one of my best friends and SCCA driver) who does not like any LS cars on road courses. He says the torque band on those engines are terrible for road courses. I figured they weren't so bad since the Australian super car series, ALMS corvette team and the World cup cars have them all over the place. Still when we met up at Atlanta he drove the C6 and described at as more work than is necessary to make a fast lap.

Well in defense of your friend... the ALMS team has spent a dollar or two reworking the car for racing purposes... which changes a thing or two regarding how the engine and car work together.

LSx engines used by the ALMS teams are nothing like the ones in street cars, so the comparison isn't really useful.

However, I can tell you that the 944/951 boys have found SOME way to make the LSx engines fast as all hell on road courses. I'm talking LS1 944s beating LS7 C6s. They're just ungodly fast.
