    Default Another Cobra

I got into my buddies car last night to make a beer run, and I noticed he had a RD. It was a really old Cobra, mounted behind the wipers and looking slightly downward! After informing him that the Cobra was a POS I remounted it next to the RVM and made sure it was level. First I checked that my V1 didn't false from it. If it had I wouldn't have let him keep it.

He probably thought you were crazy to bring it out from behind the wipers and put it up high and level...did you have to give him a 30 minute lesson on the proper way to use a RD? What did he say? Did you coax him into getting rid of the Cobra?

He tried to tell me the manual said that was where to mount it. I told him that the manual was wrong, and explained to him why mounting higher is better. The story we all use, "Imagine you're coming over a hill, and the LEO is shooting radar on the other side. His radar will hit the top of your car where the RD is first." He admitted it made sense and promised not to touch it. I did have to lecture him on the proper way to use a RD. He's a bright guy, so he caught on quickly. I did convince him to get something else. He got the Cobra for free cause a friend of his got "something better". We're gonna go out next weekend and get him a pro 78 or maybe a Vector. He left it up to me to decide. He did tell me about one time when he was driving and right before the LEO drove by him the Cobra started screaming Ka. He was so impressed by it. I told him that any decent RD would have alerted him a half mile or more back. He'll learn, it'll just take time.

I've tried convincing someone who uses their cobra with cobra mounting to get into at least a low end bel or whistler, but they keep on making excuses and telling me how great their cobra is. I've used this person as a rabbit, had him get nailed by CO Ka (I had 2 miles warning , Cobra guy kept defending his RD saying it was IO  ) There are some people we just can't convince to part with their POS.

Did you tell him you had 2 miles warning on it?

Tried but i'm sure he thought I was full of it, having never seen a long range warning before driving with a cobra.

Sometimes I think about carrying around a test chart of RD's showing how Cobra is at the bottom and when I get into this conversation, showing it to them. But a lot of people are like children and no matter what proof you show they want to defend their purchase. It's kind of like talking to the people who have never used a RD and them simply saying "those things don't work..."

But see you are a good friend to that guy by trying to better him...

Exactly. With both my Cobra XRS and my low-end Whistler that's unheard of range. The cobra's best job was a one-block detection distance with ramp-up at point-blank range, while the Whistler HAS managed to do a 1-mile K band warning before, and roughly half of that on Ka band.

But if back then you told me a detector could get 2 miles of detection reliably... I would've called BS.
