Default Speed Ticket Survey by state

Ok, so I am a native Californian and have had a few tickets over the years, pretty much all of them from CHP.

I was tagged in Utah recently - the UH patrolman walked up to my car, and said I was doing 96.

Anyway, it is routine for CHP to cut you some slack. If he detected my speed at, say 86 in a 65 zone, he would write it up as going 75. But not the Utah LEO, it was written as 96, speed limit 75. I was sort of expecting at least high 80's.

So, my survey is, for those who have been stopped, what sort of break do you get, if any? Just seeing if this is a state thing, or we're just 'lucky' in California.

Houston PD traffic officer got me at 80 and wrote me for 70 in a 60. Sucked, as soon as I saw him, there goes my Bel 980 bleepbleepbleep...LASER! Cool thing though, my long time best friend, who is a HPD officer got me out of it! Also, I have gotten out of tickets when I was in the Coast Guard and just recently got out of a ticket since I'm a volunteer fire fighter.
Outside Independence Hall when the Constitutional Convention of 1787 ended, Mrs. Powel of Philadelphia asked Benjamin Franklin, "Well, Doctor, what have we got, a republic or a monarchy?" With no hesitation whatsoever, Franklin responded, "A republic, if you can keep it."

-V1 3.872 (1.3 Mi. C/O Ka pointed away from me. 3.6 Mi. C/O K)-Bel RX65 New Backup (4.1 Mi. C/O Ka 35.494 Ghz, light traffic) -Laser Interceptor Gen-8 Dual (No saves yet ) -Bel 980. -Galaxy DX 959 with a peak and tune.
-Wilson Lil' Wil antennae. -Whistler 1585. -Whistler 1430. -Passort 3200 w/ 1000 laser detector (got stolen, bought one off ebay for nostalga).
-Cobra Trapshooter RD-31XX? (Can't remember silver/teardrop shape X, K only). -Cobra Trapshooter RD-3110 (my first RD in 1987, when Cobras were good, bought one off ebay for nostalga new in the box). -Kustom HAWK. -Kustom Falcon cordless K Band. -Kustom Talon.

Seems like it varies by cop.

Best break I got was of course a warning, for 45 in 30. Very nice of the cop.

I have been very lucky with county police in Maryland. Both stops were when I didn't have my radar detector up. Got stopped for going 60 in a 30 by an Anne Arundel County cop back on the first 2 months of my license and he let me go with a warning. He said "I was a kid once too." Again I got another warning by a different AACounty cop going 57 in a 35 about 8 months into my license and he told me to slow it down and let me go because I had nothing on my record yet. Never been stopped by Maryland state police. However...got a reckless driving ticket speeding in Virginia (89 in 70 No RD) by a state trooper and a reckless driving speeding ticket (85 in 65 No RD) in North Carolina by NCSHP. Went to court for the NC one and it got dropped (Cop didn't show) I guess you are more lucky in your home state then anywhere else, but then again us Maryland drivers are wild and the police aren't too gong ho about speeding.

That's how it is in most places. If you're away from home, they'll write you up as most people don't have the time to drive 100 or 400 miles to contest a ticket 2 months later. Easy $$ for them.

I've been pulled over a total of five times and received one ticket.

    Ditto.

Seems to me the first post has clues.

Out of state driver, going nearly 100 mph. That's not just speeding... that's considered wreckless in many states, depending on the circumstances. He may have cut you some slack by not citing you for wreckless and having the car towed.

In DE and NJ all of my tickets except one have been dropped down to 5 over. But driving in VA I would received the whole ticket everytime, never a break.

Looks like this is the place to go at least 96.
