Yeah, you gotta be careful with those "all clear to the [100 miles from where you are now]!" reports. Even if you aren't being deceived, a lot can change in the 2 hours it takes for someone to get to you and for you to get to where they were.

And to answer the question before that, a CB in the city is nearly worthless. I've had exactly one bear called out off the highway, and it was on a 2 mile road that runs between a bunch of warehouses and the highway.
Thanks. I should probably skip then. The furthest I ever drive is from Miami to Palm Beach.

Is a scanner useful in a city?

I've heard that it takes a lot of effort to train yourself to extract any useful information from it. I wouldn't know myself because my main threats are on the highway where they use the unscannable, 800 mhz "OpenSkam" system so I never bothered.

Yes. You have to be an avid scanner listener to really gain much information from a scanner in the city, especially the BearTracker versions.

Out on the open road I have had many saves from it.

Because of the larger areas that Highway patrol covers hear out west many of them have mobile repeaters. Also many of the of the vehicles use mobile repeaters to service the handheld units.

These repeaters allow low power devices to transmit long distances to the mountain top repeaters that most scanner listeners pay attention to. With the BearTracker we are listening to the low power devices or the input to the repeaters as these are GREAT indicators as to your proximity to a LEO.

My best save was when I was moving along and a good clip (25+ PSL) acting as the rabbit for two other vehicles. In the middle of no where the BearTracker went off and I knew LEO was near so I slowed down. So did the other guys. for about a mile. Then one of them decided to take the point and they both took off and left me behind to do the PSL. As they passed I honked the horn and gave the international sign meaning to slow down and then pointed ahead. They ignored me. A mile later there were 2 NM Sate Police kicking up clouds of dust in the median doing doughnuts trying to get up enough speed out of the dirt and catch up the the two of them. 2 or 3 minutes later they both were pulled over.

I could not help but wave at them as I passed.

The moral of this story is respect the speed of the rabbit with lots of antennae on it.

    Or get your own BearTracker

I like the rabbit section, and also CB's come in handy like you can't imagine, ever since I got one it has saved me more than my RD so far.

I have found that CB's usefulness varies from area to area. When I lived out east they were REAL handy!!

I think you should add this:

KNOW YOUR LOCAL AND STATE LEO TACTICS

A good speeder knows when to simply not speed in a certain area or road because of heavy use of I/O or QT radar. Also, a good speeder knows what radar bands and frequencies are used by who. If a speeder only has a RD, he needs to mark where laser is being used so that he knows no to speed without a rabbit in those areas. Ex: Here is Texas, when I receive a Ka 34.7 alert on the highway, I'm almost 100% sure it is TX DPS. Since they are notorious for using I/O and QT, I know not to take my time slowing down because they could be I/Oing less than a quarter of a mile up the road.

Just wanted to add, end of the month is the time you really want to pay attention to what you're doing.

    * Be very particular about where you choose to "fool around", do not do it with new or un-familiar roads.
