If you pull up to a crossing just as the gates are coming down. If the train engineer opens his window and kindly motions to you that it would be in your best interests to turn around. Your better off to find a different way instead of watching the train pull down another half mile and stop for lord knows how long.
btw, yelling at them to "hurry up" might generate a laugh and thats about it.

Lol, yes. I absolutely hate when that happens. I've never had an engineer motion me to find a different route, but I have had trains go about 3 mph with me waiting for about 20 minutes, then come to a stop. It's frustrating to say the least.

trains will go really slow for a number of reasons. railroads order train crews to pace themselves if their is a delay ahead, to save fuel, prevent theft,crossing protection,speed restriction and more.

Yes, I know. It's just awfully frustrating when they come to a stand still without any warning whatsoever, especially in a town like where I live. It's a small town, and there isn't anyway around it a lot of times, especially when there are an ungodly amount of rail cars.

If the problem is bad enough, then your city should dig a tunnel under the tracks. They've done that here twice now, and it works great!

That'd be great lol. Nothing remotely close to that would happen in a town as small as mine though. It's not a big issue at all, it's just enough to piss you off when it does happen.

The pace of new over/under passes has quickened as of late. probably because of Obama money.

I've seen some nasty collisions involving vehicles and trains. It's nothing I'm willing to take a chance on.
