Default 8500 X50, LASER False Alert Every 45sec or so.. [+ Self Cal]

I was curious if anyone else had had this exact issue. I'd searched the forum and seen some similiar stories, but nothing identical.

I can sit in my driveway, and watch Laser go off. Repeatedly. I've taken the X50 on > 5 Road trips, had it for the better part of a year, never had this issue. Suddenly one day, I'm driving down the road and Laser goes off. I start looking for a stationay unit, and see nothing. I mute the alert and keep driving. Sure enough, 45secs later, it fires again, and again and again. By the time I'd turned Off Laser, I'd made it to the other side of the city. No changes to my ignition system (my car has neither plug wires or a distributor (Coil on Plug Ignition)) nothing new, I am using the factory smartcord and haven't customed anything. I was just the middle of a drive. In the end the only solution I could come up with, was to turn off Laser. A solution I am FAR less than pleased about. I turned it off, then back on later (6 days) to see if the problem had gone away. Not a minute after re-enabling Laser, did it throw out a false Laser alert. I immediately turned Laser back off.

However, then I hop in the car today, and what do I see? This:

"Self Cal", I read the most recent thread about this. Sure enough, this doesn't make it look much better either.

I've called Escort and been given an RMA #, I'll be shipping them my unit. I don't have high hopes for repair/an explaination, but I wanted to know if anyone else had cases like this with their X50's and if so, what solutions or causes they had figured out.

Car: 1994 Toyota Camry, Settings: I run (in the city) in City + NoX Mode, so to remove the X Band. As Noted, I've not modified the power cord, nor has the unit been changed in any way.

Anywho, thanks for any input given.

Sounds like an X50 to me. I'm on my 3rd X50. I purchased mine straight from Escort right after they came out in April 2004. I have had to exchange 2 of them because they were defective. I'm now on my 3rd one and months ago when I stopped using it I had a Self Cal after no problems since having this one since October 2004. My Ka band detection was never consistent on my X50. I wish I had never bought my X50 and will never use it again. I am very happy with my original 8500 and my Bel STi. I plan on selling my X50.

Other people swear by the X50 and they say they have consistent Ka detection and never any problems. I wish this was the case for me, I have seen 3 straight from Escort that don't work right.

You should send yours in for exchange, repair, or refund.

That's rather disheartening. Largely, my X50 has worked wonderfully. POP Detection was always Iffy so (like the majority of X50 users here, so it seems) I turned off POP. But other than that, it had served me very very well.

With Laser disabled the rest of the unit seems to work alright. It still falses where it used to, and so on and so forth. I'm hoping this is a good sign.

I guess that's what I was looking for, thanks.

    Anyone else out there?

Well, this is off topic, but it looks like you have the RD mounted towards the sky. I'd mount it so it's parallel to a level road. I hope this doesn't happen to my X50. Sorry I can't help about your question.

    Looks pretty level to me...

If you get it returned, ESCORT should fix it under warranty properly and send it back, or replace. If it doesn't work as good, send it back again.

It's level, just between my dash, hood and the angle of the crappy photo it doesn't look it.

Someone awhile back posted that htey had laser problems, and actually got an explanation that they specifically found the fault and repaired the unit, the unit did not have a service required display. I think in your case they will just swap it out for a new one. Be happy and cross your fingers it does not happen again down the road. It is the damdest thing that Belsort product have these problems. Even if they were low in frequency it is just not aceptable. Anyone know if this was the case prior X50/rx65 units, it just seems like the older detectors never had this issue, but then again this forum is relatively young.
