Default New Here - Question on x50 8500

    Hello,

i just purchased a x50 8500 last month. Every day or so within the last week it has been flashing " service required " which i can get to stop by turning the unit on and off. It usualy wont do the error message again in the same day

I contacted Excort and they said i need to return it for repairs. I tried Best buy whee i bought it from and they wont do an exchange.

I drive close to 1,000 miles a week and really dont want to be without protection for a long time.

So, is this error severe enough to base it on a return to escort...or do they perhaps if it takes a long time just send me a new one, or what.

    Thanks you for your time

    Dan

if you bought the warranty from best buy, then shouldgive you a new one, but it sounds likeyou didnt so that appears to be out of the question. now my x50 did the same thing and i dropped it off on a wednesday at escortand i had it back in my car on friday(needed a new antenna). but with you living far away, i cant give a time frame more than it will most likely take around two weeks(rough guess) sorry that it flashed the dreaded message so quickly. it took mine i think 14 months to flash it.

Thanks for the quick reply. My only prob is that the message happens once in a great while. And when i turn it off then on again, it wont return at least till the next day.

is that message no matter how brief mean that im compromised out there?

Man i was going to get he valentine, but ive always been a huge Bel guy, and when I saw on roys site that bel and escort where one of the same i said what the heck and bought the x50.(shoulda bought in from roy)

Now im wondering if that was the right choice at all..... or should I have gone with the 995 which i loved yet has stolen a few months back...

Ugh I cant stand this... i drive so far every all the time with cops that are all over the place...

Do you leave your RD in the car all the time or you take it with you? Does your RD turns on when your car turns on or you turn it on after your car is on?

I think that if your RD turns on with your car it might get a service message because of an electric failure, not sure but read it somewhere else in the forum. Try to turn it on manually after you turn on your car, also try to keep it away from direct sunligth mostly when you are not in the car, don't leave it there.

yup all good advice there, that will keep your RD self-cal free

also I would return the unit even if its not showing the message again in the same day.. because I tryed it with my RX65 .. and I noticed one day where I usualy get "false" form groceri store.. my RD was NOT alreting, so I tryed other places where I get false.. and nothing .. the RD was NOT showing the SElfcal but was not alerting.. I turned it off, then boot it up, then it showed the self cal SCARRY :?

    Thanks for the replies.

No doubt its hot here in AZ, so I always take my detectors and thorw them in the glove box.

As for powering it on i do this manually after vehicle is turned on.

And something else i thought of, withinn a week or 2 of owning the x50 i had like 3 or 4 self cal readings. they continued for like 30-60 seconds before they would stop.

And of course, thios last week, service required messages, yet only like 1 a day.

All of this is just sick to me, ive had the unit for a little over a month now. Just called best buy to seei fthey would exchange it, heck its only been 9 days more than a month now...yet they denied it.

I will say its picking up radar, yet in my opinion way to close and the last few days ive driven by police vehicles and nothing was detected. Perhaops they were just sitting there with nothing on, I dunno, yet its quite coincidental this all hapening this last week.

Im really dissapointed in this unit and its time to take a carap so very soon.

I read somehwere to try to reset the unit..perhaps this would help, i dunno.... How do you rest this unit anyways?

Im looking at the V1 now too..... I dont want to go without protection for my 1,000 plus mile freeway driving each week..... Sendin g the escort in im sure will cost me weeks of down time...ugg......

EDIT: What about the RX65? Im going to order another detector, im just trying to decide which one. My 1,000 miles plus a week is all highway driving. i live in a state (AZ) that is 120 plus this time of the year.

Any suggestions..... And once I get the excort repaired, I may be sellng it..im not to happy with this unit right now at all... 30 days it goes bad, who would thunk it....

yeah if your deciding between the rx-65 and the V1, go with the V1.... i am getting one here in a month to test it out to see if my mom wants my x50.......but you seem to do a lot of highway trave and the x50 and the v1 to me are the best two..... i just thinkthe rx-65 isnt that good cuz of its lack of decent laser protection.... but hey thats just my 0.02..... but it has been noted that some x50's are good and there are some that are bad. btw, i had the exact same prob with yours(minus the self cal)

    Default yes

Yes this means that your detector needs to go in to be serviced it is pretty self expainitory service required... meaning most likely it is out of tune very badly which will hamper your range and sensitivity or the chip or something else needs work..

    send it in
