    Default When does self-cal occur?

I have had an 8500 X50 for about a year and a half now, and got the dreaded SELF-CAL message 3 separate times, but each time it was immediately after switching the unit on. Never went to SERVICE REQUIRED. I am curious to see if this is consistent with everyone else's SELF-CAL occurences or if it's just a fluke in my case.

it can probably happen any time, the software recalibrates the LO (local oscillator) , does it false in the usual it places it used too? if it does i wouldn't bother sending it in

Self-Cal means its doing its job, once every 6 months is a bit much... but understandable, as said above, it is just the unit calibrating itself... to bring it back on specs. The real problem is service required, that essentially means the detector has failed to calibrate itself, and Escort must do it.

Escort service rep. says the 8500 runs a self-calibration check "behind the scenes" every 8 minutes. If, during this calibration check, anything is out of spec, the SELF-CAL message will show up as the unit is attempting to fix itself. If it is unable to do so, it goes to SERVICE REQUIRED. However, I only seem to get the SELF-CAL message immediately after start-up- not just driving along. The same service rep says 90% of SELF-CAL messages are caused by voltage or temperature. Knowing this, after I got my first SELF-CAL, I started manually powering the unit up after starting the engine, rather than allowing it to cycle with the ignition. Still, all 3 times I got the SELF-CAL, it was immediately after powering on (within 10 seconds).

I've never recieved a Self Cal message. Is it common to never get one or have I just been lucky. My detector seems to work fine should I be worried I've never had one.

Not getting a SELF-CAL message is a very good thing. If your rd alerts to automatic door openers in highway mode then it's working correctly (quickest way I know of to test it). Alternatively, drive by a vehicle with a cobra on the windshield, and your rd should go nuts
