About 5 months ago I purchased a 10 foot two wire phone cord, plugged the end of the cord that matched the smart cord into the RD, the other end into the coupler all worked well except the mute button didn't work.
I then purchased a 10 foot four wire phone cord and installed it as above. All has worked well ever since.
I have had no problems with voltage and I try to plug in only after the car is started.
Just my $.02.

hah Monster is usually the biggest rip off they shine and fancy up a cable and make you pay double/triple for it and say it blocks out static, etc
Some of their stuff is good but the truth is I have found much cheaper cables that get some jobs done better.
The correct way to do this can be rather involved to one without electrical experience.
You need to take a multimeter and find out what pins are power, ground, and are responsible for the mute function. Once you have the pinout, you have to construct a cable and perhaps a breakout box to mount your controls. If you go step by step, it shouldn't be too big of an issue, but it will take time and some money. I've been thinking about making a pinout of the Bel RX65 smartcord since I'd like to hardwire mine, but I've just not gotten around to it yet. If there is a lot of interest in this, or it hasn't been published, then I may do this. If you really want to know, PM me and I'll see what I can do.
BTW, does anyone know if the Beltronics and Escort smartplugs are the same? I kind of assume they are.

As for the way to do the extension.
All you need to do is find a phone cord that has 2 different sides, 1 the same color coding as the smart cord 1 directly opposite. Plug both the smartcord end and the opposite end to phone coupler (extension adapter), by doing that, you are matching the color coded wires. That leaves the other end which will have the same pinout as the smartcord. Simple as that.

I am interested in this, as I want to mount a mute button and maybe lights in an alternate location, but possible without the base hardware. The curcuit board is not terrible complicated, but I have little experience in such things.
I've wired my RD with an extended phone wire (I made sure that it was the same connection type and wire position as smartcord), I also used a straight through coupler. I have had no problems with this technique.

Anybody hardwire it so that the radar detector only turns on after you disengage the parking brake? Parking brakes usually send a "+" or "-" signal when engaged, so wiring should be easy, just use it for the power or ground, whichever your car uses.
What do you think, overkill? Am I putting too much thought into this? Seems like a good idea if you think that RDs get damaged from being turned on/off with the car but are too lazy to do it manually everytime you start your car.
