    Default X50 POP mode

Just for kicks & giggles, I set my X50 to POP ON the other day. My detector falses in all the normal places like usual (supermarkets, hospital, pharmacy). How does it detect POP? Will it flash POP on the display, or will it give either a K or Ka alert (with appropriate signal strength or frequency number - mode depending)? Also, I thought that by putting the X50 in POP mode that it would be MORE susceptible to false alerts. So far, it doesn't false any more than usual. Any advice would be helpful!!!

It'll read "POP" when you get POP'ed - but.....

There's also the possibility of not only additional falsing (the "wild-life in roadway" warning device in IL really, really got annoying with this....), you may also encounter specific POP falses related to Ka instant-on use.

IMveryHO, only enable POP if you know you really need it - i.e. if there truly is POP enforcement in your area.

The X50 displays "POP" in the display and makes the Ka band alert sound (full strength, and then gradual fade-out, much like instant-on Ka).

I don't know if it uses the K alert sound for K POP, since I have no way of testing it. Most POP falses from cheap RDs are on Ka band.

The X50 and the STI both alert k band PoP as Ka PoP.

Mine just screams POP sometimes it doesn't have to have any detection of a normal K or Ka band.

Around here, if a cop is using POP it will POP and then say Ka band. I have it turned off since it's always used in conjunction with constant on here.

I got a lot of falses from POP, mostly from cobra's. When you get a false POP (with no detection of Ka) then just look around you. Usually you will find another detector.

When I first got my X50, I thought the POP was a detection device for other detectors because it went off so frequently.

I was under the impression that although this scenario would fit the description of true POP-related enforcement, it still carries the potential as a false-positive report for Ka instant-on falsing?

Yes, in fact it is more than likely a false POP alert...
The only way to know if a cop is using POP for sure is if you're in the vehicle with him watching him do it. POP falses can be cause by weak blips of regular radar, barely-out-of-range motion sensors, etc etc

Oh yeah I've considered that before. Either way, where I live POP is more of a hassle than an advantage. I think it's that way in most places.

Even if a cop is legitimately using pop, remember that he's not supposed to give a ticket with that info anyways. ALSO, remember that our detectors pretty much suck at detecting POP as well. Have you looked at the specs and run tests that people have done? POP detection is worthless IMHO...

A word of thanks to both of the last posts.

    ----

For me, POP is a big problem - I know it falses, but I was under the impression (as well as observation over several encounters, one of which included a citation issued to another driver) that our local enforcers do use it, and use it properly paired with Ka instant-on, in order to issue citations.

However, my certainty of POP usage for this particular township has been called into question by happya$$'s latest posts, and we've spoken about hooking-up to see if we can't scout whether or not it's truly used in that township (Cleveland Heights, Ohio).

Unfortunately, the problem is compounded by the fact that I am also reasonably certain that not all enforcement conducted by this particular township consistently utilize POP....

For me, because of this uncertainty, I feel that living with POP falsing, at least locally, is something that I must do as a point of caution.
