Doesn't seem to have any negative effect on my RX65, so I doubt it would be a problem for your X50.
Left it in my car all winter before, never had a problem
lol. its like 3 degrees right now and no problem so far.
It's 14 degrees F here, I leave it in it's case in my car all the time. Haven't found a loss of performance.
Cold is good for electronics usually anyways, not so good for LCD screens though.
Aren't the Bel/Escort displays VFD's? The V1 looked like it used LEDs. You can tell if it is VFD by shining a light into the display. If it shows a lot of "wires" like a VCR display, it is VFD. If it is a black screen, then it is LCD.
Most of the new cars use VFDs for various displays, followed by LEDs (like clocks, odometers, etc...)
The only OEMs to use LCDs are the ones that attach heating elements to the back to help warm it up fast in the winter, otherwise there is significant lag in the response time.
VFDs, OTOH, aren't affected!
X50s and RX-65s (along with all Escort and Bel models with a full text display) is a LED display, it forms a dot matrix type deal with real small LEDs while the V1 uses basically individual large LEDs to do it's thingOriginally Posted by metroplex

I don't think I've ever seen a RD use a VFD display... too bulky and fragile to use in an RD. LEDs are the most common RD displays, followed by LCD.
As for car displays, LCD is the most common type (though some, like Audi, look like LED displays, they're really backlit LCDs). I've seen VFDs used in some domestic makes (Chrysler/Jeep, GM).
But back to the original poster, RDs are designed to withstand temperature extremes, and cold shouldn't affect an X50. Extreme heat is better known for causing harm to electronics and RDs than extreme cold.

the only problem ived had is that the suction cups dont stick as much in the cold wether :roll:
