Constant on usually = ramp up, full alert, quick ramp down
Instant on usually = A sudden alert (could be anywhere from full alert if the radar source is in close proximity, or anywhere in the middle if he is instant on-ing traffic ahead of you), then a quick ramp down.

If is very important that you trust your radar. Having one is pointless if you arent going to trust it as you might ignore a real threat. If it makes you feel better, go back an change it for anothe one. Drive around with it, get to learn it's features and displays. Like a girl, if you learn and treat it good, itll treat you good right back
BTW, I think you can upgrade the X50 to Ku if need be by sending it back to Escort.

Ku wont be coming to the u.s.

The x band alerts were most likely drones. On some of our interstates here, they have "drones" set up every so often on light posts that emit x band. Most people say that these are set up to mess with people who have radar detectors, in other words to make it worthless to have one in that area. However, on our highway where we have them, they emit x band, but the cops use Ka band.. so who knows

where in ohio are you at?? I drive on rt. 2 as well as 90 all the time, and the turnpike. Only had 2 confirmed x alerts, both constant on stationary on rt 90 just west of cleveland. Every other time it has been ka, and on the turnpike has been all laser lately, but i know they have ka guns cause they used them last year.

I get false x all the time on rt. 90 and i know for a fact it is from drones because i can point them out when i pass them.

It wont, and if it does, the RX65 sucks on Ku as demonstrated by GOL.

If you dont have self-cal or service-required messages popping up then everything is normal. Also the x50 hangs onto alerts for longer than the signal is present, that would explain the long ramp down you had. Maybe you got hit with IO, most likely the case...
