What kind of batteries can be used in a SOLO S2?

Hello all,

The SOLO S2 ships with alkaline batteries. Of course, the unit does chew through batteries in 25 hrs of run time. Questions:

> Can NiMH be used? I see Escort sells them with a charger, but the nature of a NiHM is 1.2v per cell vs 1.5v of a standard battery. Assuming it is OK to use them, Will the voltage difference (3v vs. 2.4v to start throw the battery gauge off, and even cause some problem with the detector operation? It would save a bit of $ over time!

> How about Lithium? Lasts a long time in Camera's, and can not handle a sharp discharge in a short period of time. The SOLO S2 does not seem like it will cause this problem (similar drain to a digital camera.)

Buddy of mine used Lithium. He said they lasted a lot longer.

X2. Lithium is the only way to go in the Solo S2 for long life.

Screw lithium, I'd get a energizer or duracell 15 minute quick charger and some high capacity NiMH AA's (2500-2650mAh)! The performance will be right up there with lighium and you'll never have to buy AA's again. Go to escorts main site and look under accessories listed for the solo s2 (they sell a charger and NiMH cells for it so they have to be ok to use)!!!


Can find em' on ebay for around $30.

BTW I've never had a problem when they were in my S2!

I like the NiMH. As long as the system is not affected by the 'incorrect' voltage from the cells, I am cool with it! Thanks for the advise.

Also, stopped in the store to have a look, and a 4 pack of Lithium cells is $10. A 2 pack of NiMH is $8.79 , plus one time charger cost of ~$15 seems like a good way to go. $5 to run the detector every change with the Lithum is not very cost effective.

Anyone know the current draw on the SOLO? It would be a good way to determine run time
