Default X50 and a straight wire question

I might be getting an X50. One thing i dont like is the coiled wire. I would like to use a long and straight wire and continue using a 12v cigarette power. On my current detector i have a radio shack cig switch that has a on/off button. I find this to be my preferred way. I don't care for a mute button or LEDs.

Must I get a rj-11 telephone wire, hack it up and connect it to my radio shack wires?

I need some info on this please..

$6.99 12 ft. black telephone cable from Radio Shack with RJ11 plugs on each end.

Take a look at the plug ends. The one on the far left is the Passport's original RJ11 plug. The telephone cord has one end that matches (on the far right) and one that doesn't (in the middle). Cut off the end that doesn't match (middle) and keep the one that matches (this end will be plugged into the detector)

    thanks orbital you rock.

BTW.. I am proud owner of a NEW X50 RED!!! YEEEEES!!! I just got it from Best buy.. I am so excited, its a beautiful detector.. Can't wait to try it on the road.

Thank for the info. so i cut out the other end that doesn't match and connect only the green (ground) and red wire to the bare wires of the radioshack plug? It makes no difference that the rs plug doesn't have phone wires per se right?

    Yep, You got it

The " Red Wire " will be the Hot wire ( Power )
The " Green Wire " will be Ground.

Thanks orbital worked like a damn charm. Now i have a nice power on off switch at my lighter plug. Also, since im not utilizing the smartcord I won't have a mute button to change the bands on off settings. So i just turned X off and POP was already off.

I am really loving the audio alerts and ramp up. ALSO the EXP meter is excellent. So far I went to a known speed sign and alerted very nicely. Awesome.

Great, Glad you got it up an running. You'll see that the X50 is a excellent detector just after a few days of having it. I know it's saved me too many times to count.
