passport 8500 same as the x50

I was having a lot of falsing with my 8500 suddenly in the last couple weeks. I called Escort and spoke to Dan in customer service and he told me I had two options. Buy a new x50 and he would give me $80 toward the purchase if I gave him my 8500 or get it repaired for $80. He told me it would be thoroughly checked and retuned and anything not up to specs would be replaced. I told him I would like the x50, but I think the 8500 retuned would be fine. Here is the part that was interesting. He told me the 8500 came out in 1999 and the x50 in 2004 and there was NO performance difference in the two and if it was his he would spend the $80 and keep the 8500. I thought I had read on here the 8500 was just as good. I have had both and I have always thought they were pretty close in performance but I remember all the advertisements for the x50 being so much better and improved performance. Oh well, I am sending it in and we will see what comes back. The next GOL test I would like to include my 8500 to test against the others to see where it ends up.

performance wise and physically theyre basically the same, X50 had the Blue option and POP detection instead of SWS, both of which are useless IMO

My X-50 picks up radar sources in my area that my 8500 never did. I do believe that the X-50 is a little more sensitive than the 8500.

The pop detection is not really useful, but it was for me last night. I got a pop alert while getting Ka'd.

Wow. This is a bold statement by the sales rep!

Which brings me to what a Craig P. said before....about the V-1....that is have not been "updated" in years. Which, of course, IS false as the technology is updated INSIDE the unit quite a bit. The outside has not changed much.

Here you have the Passport changing QUITE a bit on the outside but the sales rep the technology is roughly the same on the inside.

I have to disagree. My 8500 is more sensitive than the X50. I chalk it up to manufacturing tolerances. In either case they both give me adequate time to react.

There is noting wrong with the older escort 8500, newer doesn't always mean better. I have the Escort 8500 X50, blue display and not impress over Ka performance. My older Escort 8500 has better Ka detection. If you need to go new try the Bel RX65.
