    Default newbie dilema

OK so i want to get a RD but i'm caught in between the X50 and the 9500i. I live in CA (san fernando valley to be exact),and there are a bunch of cops staking out in regular areas, but i dont know what band they use. i wanna get something that wont be obsolete soon and i hear escort is the best. please don't flame me i'm kinda new to this.

p.s. whats your reason for using a RD in the first place?

    I have the X50, also have a V1.

I've used both and now use the V1 unless I'm on my bike.

Don't rule out the V1 in your options. It, in my opinion, is the best. It's upgradeable for the future.

Look into the Beltronics STi. In my personal opinion, the STi is the best overall detector out right now. Best = Consistently providing the most warning time to slow down overall.
The V1 is excellent too unless you encounter forward facing Ka radar.

As you can see, there are a variety of excellent choices. I currently have the 9500i but I haven't had it long enough to recommend it. So far my experience has been excellent, but I've only had it a few days. In the past I had a V1 and absolutely loved it. It falsed quite a bit, but the range was amazing. I also loved the arrows and bogey counter. My brother has the 8500 X50 and highly recommends it. I do not have much experience with Bel. They have their fans and cynics, too. I would keep reading and see what you really want in a detector and how much you are willing to spend.

By the looks of it 3 bills is a starting price for a reasonable RD. does this forum have a classified section?

I don't know of any classified section. If you are buying new I would recommend buying from an authorized dealer such as Roy. You can order Bel and Escort products from his website. The only place to buy a new V1 is from their website (links not allowed is my understanding).

Define reasonable? If you don't speed too much, I'm sure you can get a very good radar detector for less than 300. I've heard the highend Whistlers are pretty good for the money.

crap, well i just read in the regional portion of this forum that CA is gonna convert to laser in a year or so... they said that CHP and sheriff both use Ka and K, no X or POP in Cali. so if i buy a unit now it'll be useless by no time... bummer
