Personally I believe the added performance on the 9500I recently was a new improved antenna/mixer to work better with the firmware update for the ramp up. 8)

Interesting how the 15 degrees of the horns side walls added together equal 30 degrees and that’s where off axis starts to decrease (this must be the off-axis phase cancellation & off-axis gain) I would assume its more deliberate than inherent, all RD's have this to some extent but not quite the same as the 9500I. :wink:

Just some observations about the updated ramp up:

X & K ramp seams to be almost as good as the X50 but it seems to be a bit more active on fast approaching/threatening radar and ramps up a bit quicker in those cases. Now thats a nice improvement!

1st Radar from a gun can get your speed in the best conditions at approximately a maximum of 3000ft in moving mode, and a maximum 5500ft in stationary mode. In most cases moving radar has about ½ the distance of stationary radar so the reaction from a RD should be different.

There have been reports that when K & KA is moving toward the 9500I it ramps up very quickly (moving mode) and when K & KA is not moving (stationary mode) ramp up seams normal. Allowing a more active ramp up to warn you better against moving/faster threats.

The 9500I seems to be more active in its analyzing radar, the ramp up increases faster when it encounters a fast approaching radar increase (moving radar) over a normal ramp up for (stationary radar).
I think the new ramp up is made to react more sensitively to fast approaching radar to produce a slight edge over a slower ramp up on slow approaching radar. :wink:

Edit: Apparently the newest version 6.3 X50's have the above ramp up as well.

Just a small review update: :D

Still loving my 9500I, I have had more saves than I could count. My newest encounter was on my trip to Vermont. I was going down a very steep mountain doing 55 in a 45mph and I got a weak KA alert, so I slow down to 45. As I reached the bottom of the mountain and the KA alert was getting stronger the speed abruptly changed to 20mph PSL. I’m thinking speed trap! And I slow to 20. Just around a slight bend there was a LEO shooting C/O KA. I got almost a 1 1/2mi warning, sweet! :twisted:
I was told later that day that they sit there and give out tickets all day to people who don’t know the area.

Biggest Mis-Advertisement

Is this not the biggest mis-advertisement of the 9500i. I love the 9500i, but if I was promised all this I would be upset. The pictures make it seem much different than it actually is.

Well, not exactly. I/O is simply a method of operating the radar, where it's kept on standby until the operator wants to clock someone's speed, then he turns the transmitter on, gets a reading, and then (may) turn it off again. Thus the duration of the signal is dependent on when the LEO flips the switch/trigger/button. It could be a couple seconds, or he could decide to leave the radar on for a while.

Quick-trigger is another operator tactic, not a specific feature of a radar gun. It's just I/O where the LEO switches the gun in and out of transmit quickly (e.g. less than a second), just long enough to get a speed reading, and short enough to cause some RDs to not alert. Most modern guns are fast enough to do QT.

POP is a hardware/software feature on certain radar units made by MPH Industries. When enabled (it isn't by default), the computer in the gun triggers 67ms or 16ms pulses (depending on the gun) and takes speed readings from them. Although the operator uses the gun like a regular I/O gun (press button, get speed reading), it's the computer that controls the transmitter instead of the operator.

POP is quite rare, as the MPH Bee III and Z-series guns aren't as popular as Kustom, Stalker and Decatur units (and even other MPH units w/o POP), and most who do have them either don't know about the POP feature or don't always bother to use it.

My friends distributor is sending him new Blue 9500I's tomorrow, so hopefully i will be picking up another 9500I before the weekend.

Can't wait to test it, So far i have tested a 1307 and the one im using currently is a 1707 with no updates, so we will see how it compares. :twisted:

In truth, this wasn't the case and certainly wasn't the intention of the design's implementation by the engineers. Yet Escort should slap a patent on this so quickly that it would make any competitor's head spin since it works out so very well in the real world to strongly alert you before you get nailed in a speed trap.

I remember when you first theorized this was the case with the original ramp up, now it seems all new 9500I owners have seen a more active ramp up when the radar is moving rather than stationary. maybe they are listening. :twisted:

Jimbonzzz cleared up what my guess was with the antenna/mixer, his guess was a optimized component values in parts of the circuit rather than an actual part, which i thought it was. Apparently the horn is the antenna. After the antenna, the radar goes into the mixer (stupid me :D). Well the end result was the same what ever they did. :D

Update on my new Blue 9500I (0908) in comparison to my 1307 & 1707.

I never updated my old 9500I’s i actualy liked the ramp up. So the biggest difference for me is ramp up, it’s much more sensitive/aggressive to changes in the reflection of radar. It appears that when the 9500I sees a real threat, and especially when the LEO is in moving mode (KA or strong K) it jumps into a 3 or 4 alert. I had primarily KA alerts and a few K alerts, and in those cases having an aggressive ramp up was a good thing, and helped save me every time.
I have also noticed that with falses the ramp up is less aggressive and ramps up more normally, unless im really close to the false source.

There seems to be 3 different initial alerts:
1- Fast approaching threat, ramp up jumps to a 3-4
2- Stationary threat, ramp up may start out at a 1-2 than ramps up normally.
3- False source or far away, normal ramp up.

The perception of ramp up for old RD users may be that its a bit aggressive. However I see it as potentially a great benefit, mainly because it seems more active in its alert and the ramp up is more linear than what it was before. We will see as i test it more.

It still comes with the card stating "you will be able to download and install software upgrades" and the box still has "data port will be used in the future to back-up & update software including marked & truelock locations".

A new stamp is on box stating no false alarms.

I have it set to medium brightness because bright is too bright. I also found the tones to be slightly different than my 1707 & 1307. Volume seems to be not quite as loud, but close. I use the External amplified speaker anyway. :wink:

There is a lag when it lights up in comparison to my red. This is very normal for blue displays. In my industry Blue displays require more power.

So far im very happy with all my KA encounters (about 12), most were 3/4 to 2mi range and some were around bends ahead in the road. I have only had 3 K encounters that the LEO was driving towards me and the detection range was about 1/2 to 3/4mi around bends in the road.

Its not a matter that Escort was "listening." Its still a matter of a hardware "bug" which has actually turned out to be an incredibly beneficial feature -- especially at strongly alerting the driver in over-the-hill and around-the-curve encounters or whenever the 9500i encounters a weak radar signal which is moderately to rapidly increasing in intensity. Whatever the unintended flaw is in the circuitry is, Escort should jump on a patent for it immediately. Escort, I hope that you read this post!

Nope this is not correct. The circuit and the components themselves are unchanged. I can not and will not divulge what actually was done.

I couldn't agree with you more on the above. This is exactly how my reflashed 9500i with the so-called "ramp-up fix" behaves.

The only thing which I would add is that the new ramp-up "pegs out" about 25% sooner compared to my Bel STi. This is actually great when you encounter a low power Ka band radar gun. If the 9500i has "pegged out" then you probably are within range of the low power Ka band radar gun.

The weird thing is that while the new 9500i "aggressive ramp-up" makes it more chatty when it detects false alerts around town in Highway mode, this new "aggressive ramp-up" works superbly when you are driving on open highways. The other weird thing is that the 9500i in Auto Sensitivity mode around town still is very quiet. Yet the final weird thing is that the 9500i, with its new "agressive ramp-up profile" for weak to moderate strength signals, easily lets you know if you are merely detecting a door opener which you currently are driving by, or if (by seeing a fairly continuous strong signal strength reading) if there is police K band radar being operated in the same area at the same time.

It has taken me two months to get used to my 9500i after it was reflashed for the "ramp-up" bug. Yet after using it during the past few months and learning how it behaves in a variety of encounters, it has become my favorite RD to use. Its a weird thing about the 9500i's new ramp-up profile -- at first you might hate it, but after using it for several weeks you will be amazed at how it consistently strongly alerts you to approaching radar. I now only use my STi when driving at night since I know that my STi is undetectable and since I have custom dimmed my STi's display specifically for operation at night. Yet otherwise I exclusively use my 9500i during the day. So, for me, its the 9500i by day and the STi by night.

Performance differences between the two after several months of using both? I just can't tell any difference in performance except to say that my 9500i does a better job of ignoring far off-axis alerts which aren't a threat anyway.
