I agree with you on the Norton and all Software upgrades, however the upgrade to POP was more then a software upgrade, it was a hardware upgrade.

A software alone would not allow the older 8500 units to receive POP, it took a new antenna and processor.

I am not an electronics engineer, but they have engineers working for them and they promised me over a year ago that the 8500 would be upgradable for POP and wemnt as far as telling me that the release wuld be in September 2004.

I know they told me the samething when I called them. Even I will admit that they need to do better at this. All we can hope for is they will do better at this in the future.

Whenever I have a question about my RX65, I usually call the service number at least two or three times. Each time, I usually get a slightly or totally different answer to whatever question I ask. It usually sounds like someone is just reading a script and when pressed with more specific question they put me on hold for a long time or indefinitely to talk to someone else.

I doubt if I they would do software upgrades without a sizeable fee. I sense most people just buy the newest detector instead of trying to get their old one upgraded. Belscort is in the business of making new radar detectors regularly and selling as many as possible. To give people an incentive not to get their old detectors serviced they offer a trade-in program toward a new detector. This further allows them to probably salvage old parts that could be used again. I almost believe that they count on many of the detectors being sold by nonauthorized dealers to consumers so that they do not have to provide any warranty at all. I would guess that authorized sellers account for a minority of sales.

Finally, I will say that if you want true complete software and hardware upgradeability in a radar detector then the V1 is your only choice AFAIK. But you have to be able to afford the huge up front costs and occassionally upgrade costs that are as much as another brand's detector new.

Well once you have either an X50 or Rx65 for longer than 30 days its not the brightest thing to sell it and get a V1. The radar range is pretty much the same and is now equal to the V1. I think its probably about as good as it can get. Financially its not very smart either. You sell your detector for about $100 less than you paid including tax. Now you have to pay an extra $200 on top of the money you got from selling and dont forget the $30 for a case and $40 for the concealed display (smart cord). All of that you are now spending you could almost have a Jammer and the X50 or Bel. The V1 wont save you very often (if at all) on a Laser ticket, but the jammer definately will help.

If you don't have the money for a V1 the X50 will treat you very well. I had nothing but great experience with that detector, with the exception of the constant POP falses.

Bel and Escort are excellent RD's...........Unfortunately it's Belscort Customer Service that sucks.

I like the picture on top of page 3 "has the highest POSSIBLE capability to adapt to new...".

I believe this to be false advertising, I am pissed, but know that the only people that get money are the lawyers, however it would also benefit new costomers by not getting scamed.

I recently went threw the same ordeal with my scuba diving computer, end result after a relativly expensive upgrade, the new parent company said that they will guarrantee compliant upgrade and no cost (actually battery replacement), I feel they are going to come up with a new lie later when time comes to need serviceing.

I bought my Bel985 not because of the upgrade, it seemed nice reassurance but I had reservations regarding how true that really was, as no surprise I have learned that the upgrade is BS. But guess what, I am not buying Bel again, unfortunately unless anything new comes out (hoping for GPS type units in 2006) I am left to decide with Escort (same friggin comany) or V1.... hence keep using my 985 in city, then switch to V1 for the highway.
