    Default X50 Laser Reception

I have my X50 mounted about midway up the windshield on my Honda Civic...I have heard that laser reception is better when it's mounted lower. Has anyone had good laser reception with the detector mounted like this? I can't say for sure if this will receive a laser alert good because in the 4 months i have had my detector i still have not been lasered, lol.

Laser reception is supposed to be better if your RD is mounted rather low on the windshield since the laser beam is very narrow. By mounting lower, you are hoping that your RD will be either directly within the very narrow cone of the laser beam or that your RD will do better at picking up some scatter off of the front of your car's hood.

On the bright side, it sound's like they don't use laser too much where you live. Thats a good thing!

Actually they only use laser on predetermined speed traps, and they will only shoot you with laser after they visually determine that you might be speeding. To add to that, they will sit in the most visible, obvious spots; just sitting on the side of the road on the shoulder, or in front of their HQ. So when I see them, i'm a little below the PSL so they don't even bother hitting me with laser...i want to get a hit though just to see how the detector reacts and receives it.

The greater the distance between the target and the laser source, the wider the beam is. If you mount the detector low on your windshield, you should have better laser reception in theory. I used to keep my old 8500 low. It detected laser many times.

The lower the detector is mounter, the more likely you can catch a direct-hit on your car -- probably you can approach 80%-90% detection of direct hits.

The higher you mount, the more likely the detector can see "through" the windshield of another car to catch scatter for advance warning -- the V1 has been demonstrated for 1 of 3 shots advance-warning from a rabbit, other detectors will probably be SIGNIFICANTLY worse than this.

So, ultimately, you can either get a very effective ticket notifier by mounting low or a very ineffective advance warning by mounting high. Both are pretty crummy options, aren't they? You really need another countermeasure to deal with laser if it is common.

Radar Roy has a pretty informative video on his blog site if you look up his laser install video there. He shows you a circle on the front of your car that displays just how wide the beam is from a specific distance, I don't have the link handy or recall the exact measurments off hand but know its within his jammer install video. This will probably give you a better idea of how far up on your car you can expect the beam to be detectable when they are shooting at either your headlights or front licence plate.

I think this was the video here...

In my primary vehicle I drive during the day its a Ford E250 cargo van, my detector is mounted just below the rearview mirror so its likely 5 feet easy off the ground and 4 feet maybe above my front license plate. It has picked up laser alerts when shot at me in California, of course when I got the alert I was already dead had I of been speeding and got the warning, on the bright note though the places I travel that they use laser you can either always expect them to be there during the day or you can see them visually long before your in their kill zone. However, with this van, the entire front of it is like a wall moving down the highway so for all I know he's just shooting anywhere in my general direction without even having to aim.
