i read a lot of encounters of ppl who use rabbits and also those who run into IO KA band. i always wanted to post a topic and here it is! lol

2 nights ago i was driving on 1-35 here in tx about 11pm at night on my way to austin from san antonio. i drive back and forth quite a bit and there is always a spot where i see a tx state trooper sitting around exit 193 north bound. well, that night i was hauling major a$$ going 95 in the 65. and when i was coming onto the spot i was thinking to myself "what are the chances of him sitting there this one night at this exact time and day." (cause usually i slow down in this area with a radar alert or not to be safe) and BAM literally 6 seconds later i get a full blast of KA when im doing 95. i slam my brakes so hard i can feel my car nose dive and my heart was beating so fast. i thought for sure a ticket and HUGE fine. luckily for me there was a car about 1/2 mile ahead who the trooper got first when my x50 warned me. as i am driving closer to him i can see him flashing a light at the car as he drove by and to me when i passed him, going 65 mph of course but why is he flashing what looks like a flash light at us??

but there was one thing i was dissappointed in about 1 miles down the road. a trucker alerted on my cb radio that there was a "black and white hidden on the hard right shoulder northbound on 193 with no lights on" im thinking to myself, thanks.

thats my story and i just wanted to blog on here since i love my x50 and i am addicted to this site since december checking it daily even before checking my email.

nahh, i was coming up on the car really fast, im sure he was doing the speed limit cuz the trooper didnt pull out after we passed. we were literally the only ones on the road on that part of the hwy.

I hate it when I don't have a rabbit up the road ahead of me!

In VASCAR areas here though the rabbits do no good, it's just like a mile of highway you accept you have to slow down in and let all those people you just passed go back by you again.

I've been saved by being quick to pull over as well, a good tip that may save someone someday, or at least better your odds. I've been in the rabbit position several times with others following me and seen the cop coming out lights on to get most likely me. Being quick to pull over and the cars behind me laughing as they drove by must make the cops suspect they are maybe going to run from him, or didn't notice him like I did (some times cops like attention and want to know you noticed them). Anyhow, pulling over quick has on several occasions caused the cop to pass me by on the side of the road and go after the people who kept going from behind me instead. Don't look at him as he passes you, just incase he points for you to stay put, instead wait for him to go past you and pull the other cars over, then get back on the road and past him before he has a chance to get out of his car and signal you to pull over as well, timing is very important, but this has saved me to many times to not mention here.

I don't think there is any such thing as safe with Instant On Radar. From what I've seen here in Nevada they still like to take random samples and I've seen them not even hit cars in front of me at all but then blast me at 1/4 mile back. I've also noticed that going around a curve while following a highway patrol with his gun on all the time can change from a 5 bar warning to a 1 bar warning just from the curve in the road, so be particularly careful if your not heading straight on because it can make for a noticeably weaker signal around a curve.

I try to follow less than 1/4 mile, this way your more like in a pack with the car in front of you and less like an optional random sample. It's hard to say who they are hitting since you'll get a full alert either way, but I'd suspect its more likely the car in front he was targeting. Not to mention if your close to another car and he writes you a ticket you have better chances of beating it by saying you believe the officer was looking at you, but was picking up the other cars speed since that other guy had just come up on you from behind and passed you and was clearly driving a lot faster, or more like the speed he said you were going. It's not to imply your saying the officer was lieing, just that his equipment caused a mistake in identities or a skewed result.

My biggest problem is finding another car that drives like I do, they either seem to all drive a lot slower than me, or insanely faster than me. Its one thing to make some good travel time, but I'm not in enough of a rush to drive as fast as some people I see out there going, like 90+ in a 65. I'll do 75 at a regular pace in a 65, maybe grab 80 once in a while if the going looks good and if I can be within 1/4 mile of the car in front of me I'm pretty comfortable with my detector keeping me safe.

I think 1/4 mile is plenty but many experts on the subject of "rabbits" suggest .5 mile. If I'm using a rabbit I keep them no more than .25 mile in front so I can be sure I can clearly see they're brake lights.

Oh, Memo on rabbits since I'm usually on that task. If you're the fish (trailing vehicle) keep your eyes on the backdoor. That's the fishes job.

That is a very good point, I wasn't aware that there were "experts" on the topic of road rabbits, but that is a good point, further back like in the .5 mile range does give you a good warning by watching for brake lights ahead of you since the person is very likely to at least subconciously tap their brakes when they see the cop (even if its too late for them). I guess I do that all the time and just never even think about it, just comes natural.
