What is the frequency? It might be right on the edge of the X50's frequency detection range.

I'm not sure where the cutoff is for the X50, but K band is supposed to be between 24.050GHz and 24.250GHz. My SRX overshoots this range somewhat. Anyhow, I have one store door opener that sometimes my SRX does not alert to, but sometimes alerts at exactly 24.000GHz. That's the exact frequency cutoff for the SRX on the low end. I suspect you might have the same kind of deal going on.

No, LEOs are required to keep their radar guns calibrated within the legal limits for K band radar, 24.050GHz to 24.250GHz. Speed signs do not need to be calibrated, so they tend to drift off frequency. Sometimes reception is a bit jumpy, due to traffic, hills, reflections, etc. Yours sounds totally normal.
