At SML I installed the 9500ci's GPS antenna atop the roof of the white rental car and didn't have any problems even though it was in the sun all day and the outdoor temperatures reached close to 100 degrees. Yet I can see where there could be issues if you place it inside your car atop a dark or black colored dash since dark or black dashes get really hot in the sun. Try wrapping the GPS antenna with white electrical tape since in sunlight white surfaces stay much cooler than black surfaces.

Maybe we should get Craig Peterson to test how much heat the GPS antenna can really take by testing it in the same frying pan that he puts the Valentine One in for every one of his "unbiased" tests.

No offense guys, but why are you not mounting it on the roof?, it should be magnetic and stick right on, and it's a relativly easy install, i just did my satellite radio

    As NWA said, "I'm roofless".

Can an in-vehicle GPS-antenna mounting take advantage of MEM-TEK's previous (and much appreciated and popular) "high-mount" technique for radar detectors, via use of 3M Dual-Lock, and sticking the antenna up by the windshield-to-headliner interface?

Considering that both the 9500i & ci use GPS, why does the ci require an EXTERNAL GPS antenna? I assume its just because there's no physical room for one inside the components it uses?

^ The ci's "under hood" components would obviously preclude them from being a part of the GPS antenna - not necessarily that they'd never get a signal, but that their physical position might cause more fade-outs and/or cause an even longer initial delay in lock-on time.

As for the other components of the 9500ci, the in-cabin control/integration box is supposed to be an "out of sight" item, and thus again an unlikely candidate - thus the only two remaining possibilities are the mute/select button (which again will likely be mounted in a less-than-optimal position, per signal reception, inside the cabin), or the display.

The latter is really the only possibility I see, to integrate the in-vehicle antenna - however, it would then require that this unit again be placed with an eye towards signal reception, and I think that may be unacceptable to some folks, in terms of cabin aesthetics and/or mounting preferences. Combine that with the given mission statement of the ci - to be a true custom-mount, suitable for high-end vehicles....I think that the default is to go to a separate antenna.
