I figured it would be too old, and I got a laugh out of some or your responses as well. Anyways I guess if laser is mostly user where I live (didn't know that) then a laser jammer would be a good idea, but aren't they fairly expensive, and illegal?

    Thanks again!

There are currently no know laws that prohibit laser jammers in Massachusetts:

USA Laser Jammer Laws - Guys of LIDAR

Here are the know radar and laser usages for your area:

State Troopers: K, KA and Laser but mostly Laser (I think LTi Ultralytes). The newer Crown Vic's use Ka, and theres one unmarked tinted out Impala SS that uses Ka. This is mostly through Rt2/128. (updated 05/13/2008)

Thanks for the quick response, good to know they are not illegal, but are they expensive? Also how would I go about hardwiring in a radar detector? And is that something I could do with a bel vector 995?

Radar Roy has a posted video showing how to hardwire a Bel or Escort RD. All of the Vectors can be hardwired. Escort now sells their new ZR4 laser detection and shifter system which will also connect to the Escort products and to the Bel products. The ZR4 also will connect directly to a V995 using the supplied but fairly short RJ-11 phone cord. Instead you might need to use a longer standard RJ-11 phone cord if necessary so that you can route the cord from the ZR4's interface module (located under your dash) along the A pillar and then across the top of the window and over to the V995. This way you can have the V995 mounted up high for good radar detection which also helps to hide it from thieves since you can mount it just below the front windshield's top tint strip. If you need a longer phone cord than what is supplied with the ZR4, use a quality cord which has adequately thick wires. Radio Shack still sells quality phone cords.

So if I buy a ZR4 I can connect the bel directly to it, but I would still have to have the unit window mounted right? Also I'm confused by the description on escort's website, is the ZR4 a laser jammer? And is it as good as the blinder series?

Is there an inexpensive radar unit that can be mounted out of sight (as in not window mounted)?

The Bel RD would still be mounted in the exact same place as it is now. It would just have an extra cord coming from it to the ZR4 control module. The laser jammer heads are then mounted outside the vehicle in LEO laser target areas, such as the front grill, license plate area.

Yes. The word "shifter" is just a polically correct way to say jammer. You'd be surprised how well this works. L.A.'s biggest stereo installation chain sells shifters, but is not allowed to sell jammers.

No one knows yet. GOL should be doing their annual laser jammer tests pretty soon. We, as a board, have been waiting patiently for their results, since there are lots of new products on the market. They keep their testing dates and locations secret to avoid tampering, but we're all hoping they are soon. They are very well respected(most of them at least) and the most unbiased testing group out there. Their members are all RD.net members also. Here is their home page:

Not that's any good. The Bel STi-R and the Escort 9500ci are the two best and are both extremely expensive. The Escort SR7, SRX and the Bel RX75, which are the same radar detection wise, are good, but a little outdated and are very easily detected by LEO RDDs(radar detector detectors), called Spectre. Cobra makes a cheap remote unit, but all Cobra RDs are very bad on Ka band radar, which is the most popular band out there. Having one will not supply adequate protection, especially against Ka band.

lmao. It's like Escorts version of SEGA genesis. I bet some of my NES games would fit in it.

Actually I own two of those detectors (My dads) and on K-band the one is very near identical to the Vector series of detectors from Bel.

With that said, its useless because the Ka/Laser threats now... for 40bucks in mint shape its a gem to have.

But really though... if its still in good working order... it will really be just a step behind todays big dogs (in real world) performance on K band in my experience.

Thanks again, I'm going to go ahead and buy an almost brand new bel vector 995 (found one for $130) and wait for the tests and possibly buy some sort of jammer unit as well.

Everyone has been really helpful, this is definitely one of the best forums I've been on in terms of a huge knowledge base and having my questions answered perfectly. So thanks again to everybody.

Still very cool for us old guys. Back then RD worked great. Cops just turned it on and didnt care. That was one fine detector.
