    Default Strange situation, detector problem?

I am new here but I've been sorta a lurker for the past year maybe. Every situation I've thought of for why my detector acted the way it did does not make any sense. I really just need an opinion if its a detector problem or some weird freak of nature situation I was in. I am very aware that there are many possibilities.

I have a 9500i-Expert Mode, POP on, Highway mode, mounted high w/Country Joy Crafts mirror mount.

I was heading home down a suburban street, light traffic. As I'm driving, I see the rear end of a LEO maybe 200ft ahead. No alert. I see him so I slow down to the PSL and stop at a stop sign ~50ft from the LEO. I creep foward and right when I do, the 9500i finnally alert to a weak k band. At 20 ft, it ramps up to almost full blast and ~10 ft from him, it goes back down to weak alert and then dies ~10ft later. His patrol car was facing the same way I was but at maybe a 10 degree angle going with the slight curve.

There was light to moderate traffic going down this street. If he was tagging cars going the opposite way, wouldn't it have alerted way sooner? And if he was tagging cars going the opposite way, wouldnt the alert after I passed him stay longer? Especially on highway mode(speed wouldn't affect range/filtering)?

I drive 90% in city so I get these quick weak alerts sometimes and thats mainly it. The 9500i is really protection if I happen to be going 10-15 over. But I dont normally get alot of alerts. This normal? Thanks for the input guys, I appreciate it. This detector may be too quiet...

Welcome, officially, to RD.net, fellow LGTer.

Do we know each other, BTW?

You've stated that the detector is on "Highway" mode, so that should be max-sensitivity throughout, with no speed-mediated alert/false suppression.

I'm going to guess that you could have, at the time of this particular encounter, witnessed a "POP-enabled" mediated false that was shunted to, somehow, K-band, or that you were within sufficient proximity of a newer Audi (or other vehicle) with K-band passive safety measures enabled.

Unless, of course, there's something funny going on with the "Highway" mode - I honestly cannot tell you this, for sure. I'll give it a try today, on my afternoon commute.

My use of the 9500i has been, to date, nearly exclusively "Auto" mode.

If his radar was shooting away from you, and little to no radar was reflected back this is certainly possible, especially if he was using I/O.

I haven't been able to confirm anything, of the last two days.

    Absolutely NO enforcement action!

Maybe he left a K band hand held gun turned on in the driver seat?

I wonder if the cop was using an old Kustom KR-11 K band gun. That is the gun which has a weak secondary K band transmitter which is mounted underneath the patrol car to measure the patrol car's speed. I know that this is pretty unlikely considering the age of the KR-11, but two summers ago I encountered a GSP who was still using one.

Thanks for the input guys. Yeah the detector certainly works, got 2 KA band hits going back and forth from north and south austin had ~0.7 mile alert. Weird situation...

Allen- I actually PMed you awhile back on LGT.com about how to mount the 9500;we had an e-stalker discussion. I'm using a countryjoy crafts mount now. And now stage 2

    ^ Gotcha!

    That's very, very strange, indeed.

CJR/MEM/ELVATO's scenarios all have merit, but my question would be how likely each scenario presents.....
