The color conversion involves desoldering and removing the LED displays from the attached circuit boards, and then swapping the LED displays and cover plates.
Do you really need to utilize that flush-mount cover plate? It looks clunky. Also, can you actually BUY just a red display from Bel or anything, or do you mean buy a whole detector package just for the display? (no way is that worth it).

The RED display module from BEL cost $175 IIRC. It's much better just to trade with some, and trade both lens so you can choose either. I used the non-flush mount for mine

Since the displays are so similar... do you actually need to solder one display into another's housing, or would an STi-R display simply 'work' with a 9500ci? Does anyone have any experience with that?

No, it will not work. To the best of my understanding, the LCD controllers are different for each display, therefore they process commands differently. I believe people said there was a refresh problem (one thing continuously on the screen). If you take only the LCDs off and keep the respective boards, you keep the appropriate controller. I believe Mem-Tek contacted the supplier to verify they're the same, although you all seem to forget he said he didn't think it would work when I said I was trying it

The circuit boards are identical, but they are programmed differently for the STi-R and for the 9500ci. Thats why it is necessary to actually desolder and swap the LED displays. Otherwise various information does not get displayed correctly when you plug a STi-R display into a 9500ci or vice versa.
