I was told by an Escort rep that they have a company that buys them all up to recycle them. There are a lot of larger companies that destoy a lot of good stuff. Not worth their time to sort through, test, and sell the used gear.
This is my knowledge as well, they recycle the electronics to a 3rd party. I also believe that the trade in program is only for those that are purchased from Escort themselves I do not believe that if you buy the detector a third party like best buy that you are able to trade in. I could be wrong on that though.
you got $80 for a whistler? the escort trade in terms are as follows:

I bought a red 8500 X50 two weeks ago and participated in the $80 trade in. I had never owned a radar detector before so I went to ebay and bought an old Whistler for $7 including shipping.
I called to ask some technical questions about the refurb units on ebay and the guy in customer service let me know about the program. The sales lady I talked to earlier that day never mentioned it, and she would have had a sale on the spot if she would have. The guy in customer service said why take a used when you can have new one for close to the same price. There is a whole bunch of dead or wounded 8500's on ebay that I figure people are buying to get the rebate, people were spending $40 for some of them. I guess in this economy people will do anything to save a buck and if someone else can profit who am I to complain.
After driving with it for two weeks the decision is still out. I get 3 K falsies everyday on the way to work. One strong as I come over a hill and I figure to be from a strip mall, and I nice 2 minute ramp up, then dies for a minute and then strong again. I don't know if any of you have drove Highway 75 around the downtown Tulsa area, but I almost figure this is off a microwave repeater tower around the train yards. I think the 1 minute pause is the drop off as I get 90 degrees to the antenna. Only have had 2 KA warnings, one quick weak burst downtown at 34.7, but I never saw the source and another strong signal with very little warning. I think he was constant on and just coming off a ramp of I44 to Highway 75 north, I was coming over the top of the hill going south and he was at the bottom. If you know the road, he would have nowhere to turn around, but still less than .25 mile warning. The real test will be next week when I make a road trip. The reason I bought this is going to visit family, I have been stopped four times in Northwest Missouri.
