Computer Science. I thought about (and applied for) Comp. Eng, but didn't get into the engineering school. I have a few buddies that are engineering majors and they stay busy. Make sure you pass all of your classes the first two semesters... otherwise you really can't take anything else towards your degree since those classes are pre/co-requisites for next semesters.

Overall, Charlotte is boring when it comes to speed enforcement unless you're on the highway. Not much to worry about but C/O K during the morning rush-hour, early A.M. (after 1), and the occasional LIDAR from a motorcycle. Every once in a while, you'll run into an unmarked Impala running I/O K, but it's very rare. I'd say 70%+ of my "saves" come from just listening to the scanner. It's pretty obvious when the same officer makes repeated stops in the same block range of a street.

Nick, don't turn off x band, it is used selectively in North Carolina.

I have not yet, and I may just keep it that way because I don't even get X-band false alerts. I will keep it on just to be safe, but I'm yet to find cops using X-band where I drive.

Oh nice, I was going to major in Computer Science but decided to go for Engineering instead because I got right into the Engineering school. And yes, I heard you do stay very busy with all the math and science courses too. =/ How you liking UNCC? I'm really excited about attending there!

And yeah from just riding around just north of Charlotte I pick up a cop in my town 1-2 times a week. I really don't drive on the highway much except maybe once a month to go to the mall or something. I was thinking about getting a CB radio, well I do but I use it for a PA in my car. So I was thinking about a CB antenna but I don't think it would be too worth. Unless you think otherwise...
Do you have a digital scanner? I'm curious how much did you pay for it? Have a link or something?

Thanks for all the help =)

Do what you want to with X, but listen to the guy who LIVES in Charlotte. Highway Patrol likes to hide under overpasses that emit X band from the traffic signals, so out of towners often believe they're shooting X, when in fact they're not. Does X exist in NC? In remote areas, sure. Does X exist in Charlotte? No. With that said, you could just run CityNoX and switch to Highway when leaving the city.

The school is alright. Campus life on the weekends is a whole different story. After classes on Thursdays, everyone literally packs up and goes home or to other campuses, so it's pretty boring if you decide to stay on campus. They keep building new stuff (just completed the Union), so that's a good thing.

I have a CB, and it's not worth it too much within the city unless you want to hear drivers asking for directions, nearest truck stop, or arguing with each other about politics. A Little Wil can be purchased for around $30, which is pretty cheap. If you don't decide to keep it, you can easily sell it to someone else.

You don't need a digital scanner for Charlotte (yet), all you need is a trunking scanner. I paid about $60 for my Pro-97, $115 for my BC246T, and $50 for my SC230. Keep an eye out on ebay for these, they can be found for pretty cheap as more people convert to digital.

Buying a scanner as a counter-measure is not cost-effective in Charlotte. I only have mine because radio monitoring is a hobby of mine.

All right I think I will go with your word of advice and turn off X-band =) I do remember driving on the highway and getting X-falses all the time =/

That's good! I have been to the campus there on the weekend and it def. seems pretty dead. I will most likely be going home on most weekends too. I wont have a car my first year either =/

Yeah that's what I thought about CB radios, I think it would be fun for a little but I wouldn't get any use out of it but 2-3 times a month...

And that's not bad for a scanner, seems fun to have though. Lots of cops still use them around the Charlotte area?

Not sure what an officer would need a scanner for.
