I still like the idea of a refurb 8500 (non x-50), but I'm mega worried about having to send it back all too quick due to self cal or some bs that results in a rerefurbished 8500.

i'd go for the refurb worst comes to worse you send it back once and it'll be fully operational and u have the 6 month period in case something else happens to it. it seems like a really good idea in the 32 page thing about the referbs i read it too there where charts of the performance/range of the detector and it had to closest rage to the v1 its range was a lot better than the x50 and its half the price

The little voice on your shoulder is saying 350 for a returned V1.

hmmm after looking at the last GOL tests again, the 8500 and X50 do about the same on K which is what I'll mostly be facing. The original 8500 does quite a bit better on Ka 35.5 than the X50 which is the 2nd most used in the area. Perhaps I will go for the refurb and save $100 more than I would have with buying the new X50 with a 15% discount. I just hope I don't get a dud refurb.

Roll the dice; you may get a good one like I did. The 8500 S7 is very good, and beats the 695 by a very large margin on K-band, and smaller margin on Ka-band. You'll probably be very happy with it. Just don't bake it! You can make the step to V1 later when you can afford it.

Yeah, I'm thinking V1 in the future, I would like a good stepping stone to it. I'm not sure about the refurb now after lurking around the escort forums and reading several threads about many 8500 refurbs being duds. Apparently you either get a good one or a lemon. I honestly will go crazy if I have to return something within 6 months of buying it, or be screwed after the 6 months are up. I guess that's the risk you run with a refurb. Also, I don't want to find out that they're something wrong with a refurb as I'm being pulled over. I think I may buy a new X50 with the discount amazon is offering me. I have less than 24 hours to figure it out. Apparently students with a .edu email qualify for amazon prime, so I could get free 2 day shipping which is another incentive to buy.
Will escort honor the one year warranty if I buy a X50 from Amazon?

bummer. So it's get a good deal on a brand new X50 with no warranty, or get a 6 month warranty on a refurb 8500 that will probably have to be sent back.

I wonder how many of refurbs being sent back are victims of people baking them in their cars. It's a known issue for the S7s that they can't tolerate heat, and it's human nature to get lazy. But for 150 you get a unit in perfect cosmetic appearance, that they've supposedly tested and found working within spec, then the 6 month warranty, and thereafter the option to send it in for a paid tune up if you forget about taking it out of the heat. But the voice on yer shoulder is still whispering V1. If I could do it over, I'd have bought the V1 straight after my 695 and skipped the 8500....but then I'd not have it as a backup... Plus, I really did enjoy testing the 8500. The X50 isn't as good on Q/T so it wouldn't be on my list of possibles. Refurb or returned V1. Difference is 200 bucks. 200 bucks isn't really that much money when you think about all things, and how much enjoyment and confidence and protection you'll have from the V1.
