Default Direct wire kit help :(

    Hey guys,

I first did a search on this forum to see if I can figure out how to install the direct wire kit, but I'm still lost.

I purchased the Direct Wire Kit w/ mute from eBay. ebay # 280271314914 from "safe-and-sound"

I knew I should have gotten the "Blade Fuse Tap", but instead, I just got the default T-Tap.

I have a 2009 Honda CRV and I spend like 30minutes looking at the fuse box area to see if I can figure out where to install the T-Tap. I don't want to remove my radio or cigarette lighter socket to install this tap, so I was wondering if any of you have any ideas.

I just want to attach it to one of the wires in the fuse area. From what I have been reading, the "Radio" or "Side Mirrors" seem like the best power source. I just don't know which wire to insert the tap in.

    Thanks in advance for help

If you are at all able to remove the lighter outlet, tap into the + (Red) wire in the outlet. It's what I did in my Accord. Find a good place to ground the loop. Route under dash, through side airbag cover (or trim) on the A-pillar, and out headliner gap above mirror. Use a stiff wire to pull it from the A-pillar and to the headliner. If not able to remove the outlet, you might be able to tap into one of the power wires under the driver side dash. Do you have a multimeter?

Unfortunately I am really a noob to these wiring things. When the auction said "EASY INSTALLATION", I really thought it would be easy. LOL.

I'm looking for a place to tap the wire, but at the fuse block area under the steering wheel. I found this bolt to ground it under and i'm going to wrap it around the side to the headliner.

I'm not sure if all Hondas are the same, but for my CRV, the headliner has a small gap and I can place the wire there.

Actually a KOP (Key On Power) source would probably be a better choice for tapping into power. That way the device is powered on/off when you turn on the ignition.

But in all honesty, maybe you should get it installed by someone that knows what they are doing. So you don't destroy something. Here is a real simple way to do it. Go to a local stereo install shop. Tell them you are installing a RD with a hardwire/directwire kit and you would like them to find a KOP or always on source to tap into the vehicles power. After they locate a suitable tap and install a dongle tap for you then you can go to town routing it however you want. They'd probably help you our for just a few bucks $$.

-Do you have a DMM or voltage tester and a Haynes or Chilton manual?

If not you should probably not be F'ing around with your wiring.

Easy install is a cig lighter plug for most people. Tracking down the correct power source and knowing whether it is KOP or CO is not an Easy Install for "most people".

black is ground and red is power.take the red wire and put it in the fuse, try it in a 20 or fuse for igniton.take the other black wire and ground it. turn the key and you get power.

I hard wired my 2010 Honda Civic. Your fuse panel should be pretty close, if not exactly the same as mine. Also, the owner manual has a map of it. I went to PEP Boys and got an add-a-circuit fuse. I have 2 direct wires, one for GPS and one for my detector. I used the radio for one, and power windows for the other. Both are powered down when the ignition key goes to off position.

There's this book that comes with your car called an "owner's manual." Most people apparently don't know they exist. It usually lives in that place where you store napkins and other junk, over in the passenger's seat area, commonly known as a "glove box."

Inside this magical tome of automotive information, there should be something called an "index." Look in there for "fuse." If your manual doesn't suck (being Honda, it shouldn't) it will provide some sort of diagram that will show you which fuse is for what components.

You can usually find the fuse for the cig lighter itself, and use that. Alternatively, use the radio, or any other device that you know LOSES power when the key is off.

I think it would be useful to remember that we all come from different backgrounds. While there is information in the owner's manual, that doesn't always translate into a person being able to hardware a radar detector. I have learned a lot by reading in this forum, but there is much I don't know. I would hope that asking a simple question would not result in someone talking down to me.
