Redline nabbed by spectre??????

the RedLine does run through a self calibration sequence about every 15 minutes. If the LEO did in fact detect your RedLine, and your RedLine is functioning correctly, I'd assume one of these self cal sequences might have been in progress.

Wow, interesting theory. So this would mean the Redline (and maybe every other M3 RD) isnt spectre proof temporarily during their self calibration process.

self calibration does not have much to do with detectability.Likr the Sti they are made of magnesium casing is what makes it spill proof and untectable.Now i am assuming these RD's must have been tested thoroughly for undetectability.

Ok, I'm sure someone on here has a Spectre and can get a hold of a Redline. Let's power that baby up and see just to settle some of this. Even do the 15 minute recal. I think the cop had a "visual" on you. Pretty crappy since he's your neighbor.

Actually, the magnesium case of the RedLine does nothing to contain LO emissions. Local oscillator emissions transmit right out through the horn of most detectors, what makes the RedLine undetectable are materials and technology used inside the horn, and gaskets on the inner antenna case.

If a magnesium case was all that was required the V1 would be a stealth detector..........which it's not.

If the cop saw it, there is no need to lie that he detected it. All they need is to see it to pull you over and confiscate it. I don't know what your laws/rights are, but it seems that several things could have happened. Either he tricked you into admitting it, he detected it, or he saw it.

I know you live in Canada, so I don't know exactly what your laws and rights are.

If I lived in Virginia, I would hide my radar detector (no V1 and probably only STI-R) and I most certainly would never admit to it. Also, I would do a **** good job of hiding it in preperation for the possibility they would search my car. I would have a system so that they could not see anything in plain sight. They would have to rip the car apart to find the detector behind the grill and the display hiddin in the rear view mirror. Also, I'd have a good kill switch system so that if I had to get out, it wouldn't easily be turned on if they pushed button in their search.

If he started off with any of these statements/questions:

Officer:
"Do you know why I pulled you over?"
"I pulled you over for speed."
"I pulled you over because you have a radar detector."
"Hand over the radar detector."
"Do you know how fast you were going?"
etc.

Me:
"I will remain silent during this traffic stop."

Officer:
"Hand over your radar detector."

Me:
...

Officer:
"Step out of the vehicle"

I'll get out. So now it is up to him to "legally" obtain the evidence. Either he has probable cause to search the vehicle or a warrant, or he asks.

Officer:
"If you don't have anything to hide, then you don't mind me searching your car?"

Me:
"I deny your request to search my vehicle." (make sure that you clearly deny them.. they wouldn't ask if they didn't need permission to search your car.)

So say he illegally searches your car: Fruit of Poisoned Tree, illegal evidence, case thrown out.

Say he somehow searches your car legally and finds nothing - yay he wasted his time. Say he does find something, you made him work hard to give you a ticket. :P

If he gets ticked off and finds some cheap shot way to tow your car or even arrest... I can't wait to bring that to court. My lawyer is awesome.

A good reason to have a dummy $35 Cobra sitting there just in case. Have a quick velcro mount where you pull down redline and swap it for Cobra. (And he does not notice the hardwire kit hanging there). Then again, perhaps Escort can have an option for a dummy empty shell that can mount in-place of your real detector.

Just so you know, LEOs are wise to that trick. First they will feel the case to make sure it's warm; if it's cold, that means it wasn't in operation when they pulled you over and they will then search for your real detector. If they are suspicious, they may also ask you to plug it in and prove that it works (i.e. it's not some broken-down old detector being used as a decoy).
