Mounting location... big difference?

I have noticed better reception with high mounts.

Well I finally hard wired it in (up high next to the mirror), and even if my "test" was just a fluke and the reception is the same high or low, it is now literally invisible outside of the car. Even knowing where it is and looking for it I can't see it through the tint strip, and the performance is still great!

That is exactly what you want. I don't like leaving my detector in my vehicle when I'm not in it, but there have been times when I have forgot about it. With it being behind the tint strip, no potential thieves will notice it without really looking for it. It also helps to keep down the temperature of the unit. I had my V1 mounted below my tint strip at one time, and the thing got so hot that I couldn't hold it for more than a few seconds a few times. It stays a lot cooler right behind the strip.

I don't see that it would make a big enough difference so mount it high where it's not so obvious you're running detectors.

I got mondo detects through traffic when I ran Redline on my E-350 Van, which sits 7 feet high.

I'm going with the basic height theory. There may be something to the theory that different curves in the windshield affect performance, but if I seriously consider that I'd spend hours testing and obsessing about it... I prefer high mounting for stealth, so I'd be pretty heartbroken if that weren't really the best spot.

That is exactly what I did. I literally spent hours at times messing with my mounting locations. I'm afraid to move my detectors an inch now.
