Default I now own an Escort S2?!

I'm totally out of the loop here on most current Escort products being a long term V1 user, however I know a good deal when I spot one. The Ultimate Electronics store that is closing here is in the final few days so I stopped there this morning and they had an S2 sitting on the shelf. Dumb curiousity I took it up to see what it scanned at, $135. I know enough to know thats a good deal for it new and it seemed too good a deal to refuse so I bought it. Now the question, before I even open this thing can someone put this into perspective in terms of performance in relative terms compared to the V1, perhaps the 8500. I don't want to open without knowing what I could expect in terms of perfrormance as my dad's birthday is just under a month away and he's using an old Cobra cordless and well in need of an upgrade, he always liked the cordless one because he could just pocket it, however if it performs quite well I could always use it myself... I don't expect V1 performance but it sure is easy to pocket a cordless...

For another 15 bucks you could have gotten the 8500 x50 refurb. Those cordless detectors are not good cause they are on 'standby' for an alert. Sell it and get yourself something a bit better.

Fully understandable, but I myself don't really need another detector with the V1 in my everyday car, just seemed too good to pass up. Occasionally the cordless is good for the quick stash. A rough estimate of what could be expected in terms of performance would be all I'd need to know. If it outperform's my dad's old Cobra (which I'm pretty sure was made by Escort if I recall, may have been the Solo 5 or something as the equiv.) he'd probably be happy with it. My wife could possibly use it as well the Bel she's using is getting older it may actually outperform it by this point in the game, plus she occasionally forgets to turn them off and kills the car battery if she doesn't drive for a few days. I could use it in my other car I drive only in the summer. I'm not without possibilities.

$135 is a good deal and I would use it over a Cobra any day.

Haha the S2 is terrible but do some testing with it vs the V1 you will be amazed at how bad it is. Not to mention any kind of good radar tactics will get that thing owned.

Best use of a $135 S2 is to put on ebay. You'll get more than you paid for it.

Boy, talk about some serious negativity!! Jeez people... You got a great deal considering they sold for $339.99 new. The S2 would be a decent choice if we still lived in a world where C/O radar was the only threat. Sadly, that's not the case for most of the U.S., but if C/O still happens to be the primary threat in your area, the S2 could work well. Your V1 will still eat the S2 for breakfast, lunch & dinner, but it should still provide a decent warning.

If you're looking for performance numbers for the S2, here's a test from GOL conducted in 2007:

But, as I mentioned prior, in today's world with I/O & Q/T, a cordless model simpy CANNOT detect such short pulses of radar; it's not the S2's fault, but it can't get by the laws of physics. Not sure if you've read this before, but here's Mike Valentine's opinion of cordless detectors:
