    That' makes good sense......

Anyway, the common technique for fixing a bad ground is to lightly buff the metal around the contact point with sandpaper or a fine-grained file. This always seems to work great, and I'm not really sure why. Try it.
Because the posotive is often coming off some kind of terminal or wire. where as the ground is unique and often is not the same. Paint on the metal will make for a not-so-good ground, and you will need to use sand paper to get a bare metal contact.

hey i'm new, i have an escort 8500 original, today i dropped my radar detector outside in the parking lot, it fell bottom side first, not the sides or top...so i went back in the car and hooked it up and everything seems normal, like it turns on and everything just like it usually does and nothing seems wrong, i dind't use it around town yet cause it was like 11 and i was tired but...i was wondering if anyone thinks something is wrong with it later on when i use it again or not? just curious..thanks

Your lighter socket is likely a two part piece, one part goes in from the front and one part screws on from the back. The ground connects to the back screw-on part, so if it's starting to work loose, it will cause that. Likely needs tightened.
