    Instant on can be used by any band they have: X, K, and Ka. Just depends on what kind of gun they are using. If you have your X50 in SpecDisplay, you can even tell what brand of Ka gun they are using by the frequency shown....

    Kustum Signals/Decatur = 35.500 Ghz

    Stalker = 34.700 Ghz

    MPH Industries (this is the brand that makes the "Bee" gun that can be used in a "PoP" mode) = 33.800 Ghz

    FYI: K band only operates at or around 24.150 Ghz, so you cannot tell what brand they are using soley on this information. Darn.

    From what you described, I would bet a lot of money that was an Instant On Ka hit, and you should rest your fears now that you know your X50 is working properly and capable of alerting you to their arsenal. I loved my X50 and it served me extremely well, good luck.

    Well after figuring out that they DO use instant-on here, there wouldn't be too much of a point for the X50, since once they shoot, they got you before the X50 can warn you. Although, the X50 can still alert if they are shooting a car nearby (correct me if im wrong).

    So the only benefit of the X50, would be if there is another speeding car ahead of me that gets targeted first.

    What I'm thinking, is possibly selling it and using the $200 or so for something else. I wanted this for mostly city use in my area, but doesn't seem it will be that much of a help.

    What do you think...can you convince me to keep it lol?[/b]

    With any RD the key is to always use a rabbit, otherwise even with the best of detectors... you are out there and completely prone to instant on. Much of what I see where I live is instant-on Ka action by the NYST's... and with smart use of a rabbit, and solid range from the X50 I have gotten many "pre"-warnings on Instant-on Ka...

    I mean heck if you get rid of the X50 then you have no chance of detecting constant-on Ka before its your turn... let alone instant-on Ka, so I wouldnt sell it.

    I see...

    Well when using a rabbit, how far behind can you stay from him for the alert to still sound? A few car lengths? Or 1/2 - 1 mile?

    It all depends on the road...and traffic.

    On the thruway (normally) I will 1/4mile back from my rabbit without even flinching, knowing that if he gets hit (with radar) the odds are almost 100% that I will get the hit on my RD and or see his sudden brakes... But that depends on how busy the thruway is, sometimes that gap needs to be closed to 1/8th of a mile or so.

    On flat and straight rural roads I try to stay about 1/4-1/8th of a mile back, that way it could seem as if the person just passed me, and also it tends to be a little more curvy then the thruway so I try to tuck it in a bit more towards 1/8th mile in most cases.
    On very curvy, rural roads I try to run at the 1/8th-1/10th mile mark(Just about 2 football fields)....

    In the city... maybe a couple hundred feet.

    It really is all depending on outside circumstances, such as traffic... weather... what I am driving... how well do I know a road etc etc etc So I cant tell you the best distance under every circumstance, but I can say DO NOT lag 1mile back... I wouldnt even advise 1/2mile... especially on a road with curves.
