Well it could be a big solder job for some people if one doesn't know to remove the solder with copper solder wick. Even with that, I still have to heat the pins and lift them slightly with an exacto knife blade and then use the wick underneath the pins. If you are slow and careful should go alright, just make sure you don't mix up the LEDS, they look indentical. A ribbon connection would have been nice.

There was a period of adjustment when I started using them, but a few days and didn't notice the orange. I've always gotten mine at walgreens.

Hey Ibnox.....as far as I know, those things were introduced in the United States in the early 90's....so you must really be a young 'un to talk about "dad wearing them".

I still see them advertised ocassionally late at night on infomercials, so I guess some people still buy and use them. I actually had a pair in the early 90's when they had only been out for a little while, but didn't like them. They were very effective at blocking glare and you could see clearly without squinting your eyes at all, regardless of how bright the sun was....but the "orange tint" and overall look and appearance of them just weren't for me.

So, what type of shades would you suggest these days instead?

I'd thank the seller for being so "helpful". I can't imagine it taking eight weeks to get you in a unit with a red display; that sounds like a great way to put you off rather than providing some customer service for you. And of course the warranty is now void, and hopefully the different LED types won't mess up something in the circuitry.

I think I'd have called the business up anonymously and asked "I'd like one of these detectors in red. Do you have one?" If they say yes, go in for the exchange; if they say 'no', ask how long to get a red one. I can't believe eight weeks! Ridiculous.
