Check to see if the volume is up or not. If it is then try doing a reset on the radar detector.

the volume is up all the way, i orginally thought that the mute button got jammed but that is not the case. how do you reset the radar detector?

To reset it hold down Mute, City, and Dim at the same time and keep it pressed then turn on the detector. If you resetted it properly it should say reset on the display.

You may have to send it in, it's $45 if out of warranty.

Or he could just get the external speaker... that would be the way I would go... its louder anyways.

Great Idea Air, that would allow him to test it also.

Plug a pair of headphones in to it first to make sure it has output. That way you won't buy a speaker you can't use.
